I’ve never played a soulslike before… | Dark Souls

I’ve never played Dark Souls.

Actually, I’ve never played a Soulslike game at all.

No Elden Ring
No Bloodborne
No Sekiro
No Demon’s Souls

Nothing.

So today I’m finally stepping into one of gaming’s most infamous worlds completely blind: Dark Souls.

I have no experience with the genre, I don’t know the mechanics, I don’t know what half the terminology means, and I’ve been told repeatedly that this game is going to absolutely destroy me.

Which means there’s only one thing left to do…

Play Dark Souls.

  1. I enjoyed watching you play a souls game for the first time immensely so I subbed and I really hope you finish this playthrough
My first souls game was bloodborne (I’ve played them all and BB is still my favorite followed by ds1 )
You’re much better than I was when I first started playing souls games
I definitely didn’t get either of those first two bosses on my first try
    Praise the sun

  2. As someone who has beaten all 3 dark souls games i will say ds1 is by far my favorite but overall has less content it's humble but enjoyable ds2 everyone says is terrible which it isn't it's just different ds3 has more content overall but less qol features ds1 is without a doubt my favorite hopefully you'll come to enjoy these games as much as i did and whatever you do don't go hollow

  3. Eh… so the "difficulty" of the soulsborne (what the community calls dark souls + sekiro + ER + Bloodborne, basically the Fromsoft souls games) is a messy discussion because there's a lot of aspects that affect it. How experienced are you? How stiff are the controls? How punishing are mechanics vs enemies vs environments? Etc.
In general I'd argue that no matter which one you play first, your first souls game is going to be the hardest with the specific tittle chosen having marginal effect.
My two cents on the ones I played:
DS1 is the least polished, so in a way it's hardest because just controlling it and doing what you want to do can be tricky.
DS2 is very experimental and switches up a lot of things, though I'd argue it's the most punishing for failure (your max hp is lowered every time you die, up to half, and you need to use a consumable to reset it).
DS3 is probably the most polished in terms of gameplay, but the enemies are more demanding, so it's easier to control, but the game demands more from you. It's probably my favorite of the trilogy.
Sekiro has a very different combat flow which can be hard to adjust to, and a lot of encounters force you to lean into that specific flow. It's very satisfying when you do, but It was the hardest for me, because the combat never really clicked with me.
Bloodborne really wants you to be very aggressive (you can regain some lost hp if you attack after being hit) and is a lot faster paced than dark souls games. In that sense it's a bit like Sekiro meaning if you can adjust to the different combat, a lot of people say it's the best fromsoft game. It is however notorious for limited supply healing items that you need to farm/grind for if you run out which can be annoying as it only really punishes those who already struggle.
Elden Ring is generally very polished, gives you a lot of tools to deal with the challenge it puts in front of you, and as long as you don't let the more toxic part of the community get to you (some people like to arbitrarily cherry pick which mechanics are ok to use and which you're a dumb** noob for engaging with), it's on par in difficulty to the rest of the games with one caveat – because it's incredibly open ended, if you're struggling, it sort of expects you to just go somewhere else and come back when you're stronger or have more tools, and it will absolutely let you walk into situations that are horribly difficult with little warning. It's my personal favorite, sort of for that reason – it's incredibly open, letting you play it in thousands different ways that no other game really has the chance to do, despite their generally high replay value.

  4. I'll be honest I subscribe just to watch you play this game especially with how hilarious you were in playing it . There's parts coming up much later in the game much much later actually that I cannot wait to see you react to

  5. immeditally caught by the pendent bait, only to instantly run past the boss into the backroom… A+

Edit: oof. Biggest oof. No ladder kick.

Edit2: i will watch the entire playthrough if you put it up. Watching someone learn Dark Souls for the first time is transcendent.

  6. If you play up to a certain point the camera will kill you. Not might, will. Especially in the prepare to die edition. There's a point in Anor Londo (that'll make sense later) that if you don't have the camera position right you will run off a ledge to your death because the camera angle will change and forward will now be left.

    Fair Warning
