In my previous video, I travelled from the USA to Canada by ferry, crossing from Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Now I’ve arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada for the first time, and as someone from Scotland, this is somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for years. I’m setting off on a solo Nova Scotia road trip to discover the coastline, colourful fishing towns, history and incredible seafood of Atlantic Canada.
Starting in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, I travel along the Nova Scotia South Shore, visiting Barrington, Carters Beach and colourful Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Along the way, I learn about Acadian culture, try local seafood and visit Peggy’s Cove, one of the most famous places to visit in Nova Scotia.
My first impressions of Canada have been so positive, and next I’m continuing my Canada travel adventure north towards Cape Breton Island to discover Canada’s Scottish history and Gaelic heritage.

WHO AM I?
If we haven’t met before… Hi, I’m Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

You realize Nova Scotia in its entirety is not even 1% of the area of Canada.
So excited you are visiting us in Canada! (I'll be watching closely to see if you drive by my sister's place on the Cabot Trail) lol
great stuff ms. aisling. thnx!
Imagine it would be a 6-1/2 hour flight to get to Vancouver British Columbia from Halifax Nova Scotia ! Enjoy your visit to Canada, I wish to go to Scotland someday, it’s the birthplace of my Grandfather. I live in Ontario
Beautiful place.
Wow a travel video where someone is not showing what they eat every 30 seconds! And no shots of you eating @#$#@ poutine…well done Ruth!
We love you Nova Scotia may you stand forever proud and when they call you Bluenose, just smile and take a bow.
I am glad that you were having a good time in Nova Scotia and that you enjoyed Boston MA 🇺🇸 Steve from Boston MA
The "bridge" to get onto a ship is called a "gangway", by the way, Ruth :).
Yes, depending how close you stick to the shore, with a few stops Halifax to Yarmouth (or vice-versa) can be a full day of driving. It's about three hours if you take the 103 highway, but it's mostly rather boring.
You’re in my homeland ❤and I just came back from a two week vacation there myself. By the way, Antigonish is pronounced anti-ga-nish! I’m looking forward to seeing part two in Cape Breton because I have family and land in West Arichat! I’m seriously thinking of moving back there from Ottawa as I really miss the ocean and the family gatherings! The people are just so darn friendly, you can’t find hospitality like that anywhere west of the Maritimes! I’m glad you’re loving it as much as we do! ❤
I love lighthouses, I might have to plan a visit someday.
Many Acadians were expelled from the British colonies centuries ago, and fled to Louisiana, and their anglicized cultural name morphed to “Cajun”
It's got to be interesting with both driving on the other side of the road, and a left-side drive vehicle! I'd absolutely love to visit the UK one day as much of my ancestry is Scottish. All the best and enjoy your stay, welcome from Manitoba!
It occurs to me that last episode you traveled from New England to New Scotland and it makes me wonder if the settlers who named those two regions were in cahoots or in competition
Nova Scotia looks nice as well! Some lovey locations along the way, excellent video Ruth
"Mig maw" is the pronunciation…
I am glad to see you enjoying our Island. Nice to see your smiles and enthusiasm. 💯👍
Welcome to Canada, Ruth!
Cape Breton girl here best place in Canada ❤
I think I Commented earlier but also if you go out and about on trails or even the highway watch out for coyotes and moose and deer(both on the mainland and Cape Breton.) There should be signage regarding such. And make sure after a trail walk check for Black Ticks as you are in the tick capital of Canada. imo you are in the most hospitable and welcoming communities in 🇨🇦
Do take opportunity while travelling to listen to Nova Scotian music:
– songs like Farewell to Nova Scotia, Barrett's Privateers*, and
– folk/country musicians (e.g. Rankin Family, Rita MacNeil),
– Canadian Celtic / Down East musicians (Ashely MacIsaac, Mary Jane Lamond – she sings traditional Cape Breton Gaelic songs).
– or in general CBC Radio One (which has many regional programmes) for the general vibe & info.
* Technically not Nova Scotian 😉
You were already running late for Peggy's Cove but it's a shame you didn't get to stop in Shelburne or Liverpool
This is wonderful seeing you in Scotland and of course seeing Scotland.
You need to come back for a longer visit Ruth, you missed a lot of fantastic places to explore. I live in Bridgewater that has some great places around here. You can fish for mackerel and haddock from the shoreline. You basically had a “taste of Nova Scotia”, as a Scotsman living here it is like the West Coast of Scotland in places with a lot of history around every corner.
Had the luck of visiting family back in may and Shaw's landing was stellar. I came from the west coast of Canada. Enjoy your time! Look forward to more videos 🙂
Canadian here. What a great video! I've never been to Nova Scotia, but you have captured the magic that everyone knows to be true. Thank you! I'd love to visit some of those places some day. I learned a lot from your video. 😉
Go you with the malt vinager. Wee
So glad your in Canada. wee . Nova Scotia, a tiny province by size, is still almost half the size of of all of the Scotland ya know.
Great video–I like your style
I hope the lady in Antigonish told you about the Highland Games that are held there each year.
I lived in Nova Scotia for 25yrs before retiring in British Columbia and loved the scenery but it is the people that make the maritimes special. The fall is amazing for the trees change from green to fall colours. I hope you have a wonderful time.
I visited Peggy's Cove over 40 years ago. It wasn't a "tourist trap" then. I took a picture that won fist place in photo contest. Love Nova Scotia. The best bread I ever had was in the Louisburg fort bakery.
Nice travels Ruth, : )
Hi Ruth! I was born in Nova Scotia, in Halifax and lived in Dartmouth and Greenwood until I was 3. It is a beautiful province full of lovely people. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
Advice for the next time driving on the right side of road: *Buy a dry erase marker and draw a small arrow on the inside of the windscreen. It's a constant visual reminder and won't obstruct driving.
Sable Island is managed by Parks Canada as a national park reserve.
On October 17, 2011, the Nova Scotia government entered into an agreement with the federal government to eventually protect the island as a national park. The news followed an announcement made by the federal government in May 2010, increasing the level of protection the island receives by transferring control from the Canadian Coast Guard to Parks Canada, which manages the island under the Canada National Parks Act. The establishment of the park reserve means that the island, and the surrounding area within one nautical mile (two kilometers), cannot be drilled for oil or natural gas.
Sable Island became a National Park Reserve on June 20, 2013, with approval of Mi'kmaq stakeholders. Full national park status has yet to be achieved, pending settlement of Indigenous land claims. The park is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna including a breed of the Sable Island horse. The park is also a breeding ground for marine life.
In July 2016, a hike across Sable Island was added to Google Street View. Google worked with the park service to add the interactive views of Sable, as well as five national parks across the country. The imagery was collected in September 2015 by a Parks employee who carried a backpack version of the Street View car camera around an area on the centre of the island, part of Google's Trekker program which explores off-road scenic locations. The route follows a hiking route that the park service uses to escort adventure tourists.

Oh no! You missed the Shag Harbour UFO Museum!
Why is it called Peggy's cove? Thank you!
Welcome to Canada! Nova Scotia has so much beauty. I think Peggy's Cove is worth seeing.
Enjoy the Province and the incredible seafood!
Take the Eastern Shore on your way to Cape Breton. Plan to spend the night in Sheet Harbour. Stay at the Periwinkle Tides Inn on us. Just DM me to make arrangements.
I love how you say “Nova Scotia”. Keep up the great work.
My Mom was Scotch and Irish
My Da was Scotch and soda
Just kidding, Ruth 🎉

the owner or original owner of shaws landing lost his daughter in Swissair 111 crash and moved to west dover after the tragic crash
Hello from Dartmouth!! I hope you enjoyed your stay 🙂 <3
