B52 is was produced in 1961 58 years after the wright brothers first flight. In 2026 they have been flying 67 years. They have been flying longer than from the first flight 1903 to construction.
The B-52 is a classic example of what was once old is new again. Good old American engineering.
They'll still be flying when we can buy a real "Mr. Fusion".

Um… the 50's was not the height of the Cold War, it was just the beginning!!! The Cold War started in 1947 with the Truman Doctrine's goal of limiting Soviet expansion, the Marshall Plan of massive US aid at rebuilding Western Europe… The true height of the Cold War was the 70's and 80's which pressured the USSR so much it collapsed in the 90's.
The b52 took 6 years from concept to flight.
In the end, it probably would have been cheaper and faster to develop a completely new cruise missile carrier based on the civilian Boeing 777.
Some weapons just last. The Colt 1911 pistol is still in (limited) service but the M2 Browning Machine gun still gets strapped to everything. The B-52 has that same “just works” energy. When something has faced combat many times without failing, that’s what gets re-selected if the competitions are fair.
Would it not be cheaper to build a fleet of Boeing 777-200LR units with bomb bays than to overhaul the BUFF like this?

As a former military planner the B-52, while loved, shouldn’t be flying. The B-1 should have replaced it outright but budget reasons killed the chance of that. It could never be used to bomb a near peer adversary like Russia or China. Their air defenses would easily shoot it down. It’s only useful for bombing terrorists in Iran or Afghanistan.
