The Captain Who Fought Off Samar, Robert W. Copeland
At the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944, Robert W. Copeland led USS Samuel B. Roberts into a desperate attack against a vastly superior Japanese surface force. Roberts was eventually sunk, but her aggressive defense helped protect Taffy 3 and earned Copeland the Navy Cross.
