250 000 People Fed a Day, From One Maize Mill | Roff R-70

Six millers in Kenya, South Africa and Namibia talk about what the Roff R-70 has meant for
their businesses – where they started, why they chose Roff, and how their operations have
grown since.

Evans Killy of Buffalo Millers in Eldoret started with a 20 tonne machine in 2013 and today
runs 200 tonnes with more than 150 employees. At Idlani, Johan and Josua Pietersen talk
about upgrading their R-70 to four tonnes an hour to keep up with demand for their meal;
they have since added a second R-70, taking them to eight. At Rossgro Milling, Chris
Rossouw bought his R-70 knowing nothing about maize milling, and mill manager Shaun Archer
calls it a forgiving machine to learn on. Shiraz Bhamjee of Kamunu Milling in Namibia mills
around the clock and still cannot mill enough.

Six mills is not the whole story
A single R-70, milling six days a week with time left for cleaning and maintenance, turns
about 2 700 tonnes of maize a month into enough maize meal for roughly a quarter of a
million people a day. There are more than 80 R-70 plants running across Africa. And the
R-70 is one mill in the Roff range – the SP-1, R-40 and C-80 are all out there too.

Add them up and Roff mills account for a meaningful share of the maize meal eaten across
sub-Saharan Africa every day. We are putting that story together properly, as a video and

About the Roff R-70
The R-70 is Roff’s commercial maize milling plant, built for millers moving into packaged
maize meal or expanding an existing operation. It mills 4 to 5 tonnes an hour at an
extraction rate of 70 to 74% super, fits into a 14m x 9m footprint, and is designed to be
run by a small team.
