Did you know that Dick Cheney and Kamala Harris were both presidents?
Well, technically they were “acting presidents.” An acting president is someone who carries out the powers and duties of the American President even though that person actually doesn’t hold the office, and both Cheney and Harris did this because the Constitution says Vice Presidents are first in line to serve as acting president. For 85 minutes on November 19, 2021, Harris became the first woman with presidential power when President Joe Biden was under anesthesia for a colonoscopy.
Cheney was acting president twice, also during colonoscopies.
On both June 29, 2002 and July 21, 2008, Cheney served as acting President when President George W. Bush was also under anesthesia for colonoscopies.
The only other time in American history when a Vice President served as acting president was when George H.W. Bush filled in for President Ronald Reagan when he had colon cancer surgery on July 13, 1985.
