I Tested Two 3D Scanners: One Is Simply Better!

Modern laser-line 3D scanners have become surprisingly capable, but how different are two similarly priced models in real-world use? I compare the Creality Raptor Pro and Revopoint Metro Y Pro across everything from tiny mechanical parts and an N64 controller to a Vespa and a human scan, looking at detail, accuracy, usability, and software. Both are impressive engineering tools, but after extensive testing, one of them is much easier for me to recommend.

  2. My organization is still holding out for a company that ports their 3D scanning software to Linux. We don't run Windows, so none of the current offerings are of interest to us. We hope that changes soon!

  3. oh look the scalebar. my boss always telling us to verify that every day if a machine is acting weird. just an fyi, ceramic balls arent the easist thing to scan. matte aluminum or matte steel is easier.

  4. I gave up on Revopoint years ago after buying several of their scanners. I've since had every laser scanner from Creality and they just keep getting better. They're very good and very reliable.

  5. Good 3D scanners where up until now too far outside of my comfortable price range to give one a test myself, but a few days ago, i finaly bit the bullet as i found out that refurbished CR ferret SEs sell for sub 200€ on ebay what is just barely within my "risk the gamble if desperate" range …
    i really hope it won't dissapoint me too much (yes i informed myself on the problematic parts of 3dscanning and am expecting entry level performance at best)

    the dremel is niceand works great for removing weld marks from 3d prints but it is relatively low power otherwise, oh and don't be like me and pull a linus, DO NOT DROP IT, mine fell down once badly and since got an annoyingly loud buzz to it.

    But nice free web tool, looks like it has all the basics needed for reverse engineering scans manually! Well done! Thanks for improving the open source community!
    I tested several brands of sublimating sprays, and AESUB outperformed the rest. If you need it (mirror, transparent), its worth paying for. Most high end scanners work perfectly with high gloss or semi-polished metallic/plastic surfaces.
    You could probably reach out to your local Zeiss dealer and get them to demo their high-end ATOS scanners so you can have a good benchmark

  9. Can you do testing on the spray? I see experts claim it does/doesn't affect the measurements of the laser. Some say the coating is sparse and let's the laser still hit the original surface, but I would love to see it put to the test.

  10. Re your wife's scan: be aware that pixelation isn't secure if the object is moving. People can take successive frames and reconstruct the original object by observing how the big pixels change frame-to-frame.

  11. Thanks Stefan. For my purposes, I'm not sure I'd need the extra resolution of the Creality. I would only use it as a reference for creating the geometry in CAD, so it doesn't really matter if it's a bit lumpy. I wouldn't even be bothered if there were holes, as long as there was enough information to reconstruct the object. Much more important for me would be the usability, and it looks like the Creality wins hands down. If you're willing to fork out that sort of money on a tool like this, you're planning on using it a lot, so for it to be as laggy as you showed is a big red flag.
    My only problem with your comparison is that you weren't comparing like with like. Once you factor in the accessories that are included with the Metro, the Creality is significantly more expensive.

    What I would really like to see in a scanner, is rather than capturing tool marks and scratches, is to be able to configure it to fit lines, arcs, and spline curves to the points. You'd specify the maximum deviation from a line before it was treated as the start of a separate segment. Each line from the laser would be returned as a set of line segments, some of which are contiguous. The PC software would take these segments which all overlap in various directions and fit them to planes, cylindrical or conic sections, or spline patches. E,g, if a whole load of crossing straight line segments all lie within the specified tolerance of a plane, it can determine the edges of the plane and output this as a plane rather than a mesh of thousands of rectangles. By collecting spatially related arcs, it enables fitting them to a cylinder, allowing cylindrical features such as drill holes, or fillets to be extracted from the data. This would allow it to convert the data into a concise CAD model instead of an enormous STL file which is useless for modelling anything other than organic sculptures. Although it would be possible to do this algorithmically, this is also a valid use case for AI, which can spot patterns in the data.

I switched to the Revo Y PRO having had the Creality Raptor PRO before it simply because I hated the cable with the Creality and didn't want the added bulk of the adapter and the Revo has marginally better specs.. Having used it I like the wireless aspect, the hardware does appear to be better but software…. it needs work!

  13. Bought the base MetroX when it launched almost 2 years ago now. I can say it definitely took some time to get used to, the software still gets regular updates which have improved things in the past.

    I offer 3d scanning as a service, most of my orders have been for various car parts like body panels, carburetors, engine blocks and I've been getting some really good results.
    I was also asked to scan some small shiny figurines and that works out well with a bit of scan spray.

    Overall very happy with it, I built a powerful PC in a suitcase so I can more easily scan outside my workshop. Printed a bunch of shapes with magnets to stick markers on, that's been a major improvement. Also printed a 600mm diameter table that screws on the original turntable to scan bigger parts. That being said I also rarely use the automatic scanning with the table but it's a good surface to work with

  14. I'm a hobbyist and use the Creality Scan Ferret Pro. Back when I first got it, the Creality Scan software was dookie on my Windows gaming desktop. It would simply not run on a laptop without a dGPU. And the phone app wouldn't even open. It would just crash immediately. I wanted to sell it, but my conscience wouldn't allow me pawn off such a piece of garbage to another person and have the nerve to charge them for it. It sat collecting dusk for some time. I recently pulled it out again, thinking I didn't give it enough of a chance, and I wanted to reverse engineer something. I had to update the software, but I must say, it was a night and day difference. I was pleasantly surprised. It was very quick on my desktop, and it was usable on both the laptop and even on my phone. I have a Samsung S24 Ultra which does have a good processor for a phone, and I would imagine the Ferret Pro doesn't produce nearly as much data as the Raptor Pro. I will say though, that I do not process the data on my phone or laptop, I merely capture it, and then process it on the desktop. Though that vastly comes down to speed. My phone overheated trying to process the scans. The laptop did it but it took a very long time.

  15. Could you please comment on the ability to use these devices on a Linux platform? For a few of us, this a critical concern to avoid running into a massive headache and something that just lives on the shelf because we can't get it working properly on our systems.

  16. I'd really love to know more about your scanning of your wife during pregnancy, I hadnt thought of doing that and my 3d scanner sucks for people, but its awesome idea… would love to know what you found worked best.
