Interestingly, WWE’s top titles should never have been unified; they ought to have remained separate. In 2001, Chris Jericho was slated to win the World Championship from The Rock, and Kurt Angle the WWE Championship from Steve Austin, but a unification match between them was clearly unnecessary. Under that scenario, Triple H would have won the title from Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 18, while Kurt Angle defended his belt against Kane. A draft could have followed WrestleMania, resulting in Triple H becoming the exclusive RAW champion and Kurt Angle the exclusive SmackDown champion.
In essence, WWE management made a mistake by unifying the titles, as it meant fewer wrestlers had the opportunity to win a world championship. Vince McMahon repeated this error in 2013 when Randy Orton took the title from John Cena, and again at WrestleMania 38 when Roman Reigns took the belt from Brock Lesnar. Because of this mistake, many top wrestlers—including AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, Finn Bálor, Sheamus, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Bobby Lashley, and Drew McIntyre—missed their chance to compete for the World Heavyweight Championship; that is a fact.
Holding a world championship belt for an extended period is far more prestigious than possessing two belts!
