A/B testing sounds rigorous. We tested it, the data decided. But for most mid-market websites, the data never had a chance to decide anything.
A/B testing needs volume. To know that version A genuinely beats version B, you need enough visitors and enough conversions for the result to mean something. Most sites don’t have that. They run a test for two weeks, see version A is up 12%, declare a winner and move on. That 12% is usually noise. Run it again and B might win by 9%.
So what do you do instead? Three things, all free:
1. Watch ten session recordings of the exact journey you want to improve. Ten real sessions settle a debate faster than ten meetings.
2. Open the click heatmap and find what people mistake for a CTA button. You’ll be surprised what gets clicked and what gets ignored.
3. Open the scroll heatmap and check whether people even reach your key message. Everything below the drop-off line is effectively invisible.
Then make one meaningful change based on repeated behaviour. Not ten tiny changes based on noise.
Running a test isn’t proof. Proof is knowing the test can answer the question.
