Canada readies $28B in tariffs | CTV News Ottawa at Six for September 6, 2026

Tensions continue to escalate in the Canada-U.S. trade war as the federal government prepares to impose $28 billion in retaliatory tariffs on American imports. CTV’s Jeremie Charron reports that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent compared Canada to a “yippy dog” during an interview on Fox News. Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, believes the ongoing verbal attacks are a deliberate tactic to distract from domestic issues in Washington. The new counter-tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday despite informal talks between Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and his American counterpart.

  1. Bessent, I have a yippy dog that I'd like you to meet. Bring your Shepard with you. My little dog wants to show you his teeth. He can sort you out and then your shepherd too.

  2. I have, always, bought Local Products, in Canada. Aside from Apartment Expenses, Groceries are my highest expense, as I do not drive. Every thing I need/want is available in Canada. In some cases, Canadian Groceries are healthier. There are less additives.

  3. Why bother with counter tariff's. This is like putting a tax on Canadian consumers as the importer pays the import duties into Canada and passes the cost on to Canadian consumers. Let the USA apply tariff's that the importers would have the American consumers pay there 50%+ import tariff's. See how long it takes for American consumers look south and see Canadian consumers consuming goods with no extra fee's involved. By all means shop Canadian but why charge Canadian consumers more for goods purchased from across the border. The American consumer will be in an uproar knowing Canadians are living peacefully with no extra charges on their imports.

  4. Trump wants Canada; this is existential. Regardless of how much pain, show the world America is not trustworthy. If they can attack Canada, who is to say anything they say about Iran is truthful?

  5. Not only is it a deflection of his trade policy, and Iran. Its a constant history of events worthy of distraction. Lets add Epstein and the murder of American citizens on video by his ICE force
