My dude, what you get made in China is what you pay for. Yes, cheap stuff is made there but also high end electronics. I find the assumption that China can only produce crap really offensive. People order crap is what is happening, not that that's the only thing they can make. For the longest time in history China has produced the world's most coveted luxury goods. The bag sits oddly on the table. It was leaning. I agree with your wife…300. max for that RL bag.
Also, how do you feel about feet on a bag? I feel all flat bottom bags should have them to help protect the leather. I add them to my bags. Especially totes.
I may be wrong, but I think sometimes Nordstrom will price match if you show proof of lower price at time of purchase. Maybe you can try this for your next Nordstrom purchase if you face a similar discrepancy in price!
Ralph Lauren Purple label would be my recommendation for the 2000-3000 range. Some of the nicest leather I've felt.

I wouldn't pay over $100 for a bag that didn't close or have brass feet to keep the bottom from getting worn. To me, that's lazy and incomplete design.
