In September 1938 Marion Post Wolcott photographed the families of Bertha Hill, above Scotts Run, West Virginia, for the Farm Security Administration — and wrote on one negative that many Mexican and Black miners had been brought in around 1926 to break a strike, and that twelve years later about one mine in four would hire them at all. The 1926 strike, the Bertha Coal Company’s “Store With a Conscience,” and every face on the hill are in the full film.
