In this episode, we put our hull welds to the ultimate test using dye penetrant to uncover hidden pinholes and flaws below the waterline before it’s too late. Plus, we explore a unique lifting platform idea for the stern, clear out the old steel exhaust, and start tackling some of the worst corrosion yet along the chine and engine room.

Stairs- have you considered bringing the stairs straight back to a platform then a couple of steps turned 90 degrees to the centre? The steps would be full steps for safety, wet weather etc… also the handrails would be easier to manufacture. Also do you really need to lots of steps? Could the space at the top be used better as seating if you don’t need the 2nd steps? Obviously weight balance is the key here.
Also any build for land won’t last long in the salty environment of the sea.
Also can you do a couple of mins on welding with the laser welder when you can?
Appreciate the time and effort you take to post the videos, thanks,Lee
I think you know the answer to that yourself, just have many, many bilge pumps set up with a very large one as standby as per Lifeboat type. You will see the bubbles when you launch her
OMG, after seeing the holes in the engine room I’m more scared than ever. 🙀
no don't do it, more weight and more to go wrong, also goes up too slow.
How I think back to the way you tried to, sympathetically, remove the aft cabin furniture. Now you just don’t give a shit and just rip wooden work out 🤭
Hey Sean. I emailed you a picture of Succes steel cruisers with single side spiral stairs. They managed to make both sides match up nicely. Have a look and maybe get inspiration!
Fixed stairs all day long. A platform will look ugly.
One thing to check are the horizontal stringers on the hull.
Van der Valk didn’t ad any limber holes in it, so water from condensation collects on these stringers and will start coroding thru the hull.
We did a similar project for a client and he had to replace parts of the hull where the stringer are.
So you might want to drill holes in them so the water can escape to the bilge.
Good luck with the project!
Weld over all your old welds that are important Hope for the best
Two comments about the stairs. What ever you decide to do build it out of wood first. If you mock up a pair of stairs and they don't meet your needs modify them to fit your step. Second if you have to add more steps to feel comfortable and secure you can always cut into the aft cabin at the top as needed. The loss of aft cabin at the top in each corner wont be a large loss of space in the room. Remember to keep it simple but safe and stylish
Do stairs, less things to break, and your boat will look splendid!
Yes it will leak, and worse than that by the look of the welding it will fail.
Keep up the great work
Personally I would consider a single staircase. I know it will mess with the symmetry but It might allow you to gain back anything lost in the cabin due to a less steep stair well on the non stair well side.
Shaun, you really do need to tidy up everywhere. Tidy as you go, it's much better to do it that way rather than leaving a big mess. It actually saves time and you don't lose anything.🥰
Welding certainly better. ❤
What ever you do keep it simple. Fixed stairs buddy. What ever floats your boat as it is yours.
I have a certificate in underwater wallpapering if that's any good?
¿CUAL ES TU PROFESIÓN? ADEMÁS DE ELECTRICISTA, CARPINTERO, SOLDADOR, PSICOLOGO, HUMORISTA, INGENIERO, ESPOSO, PADRE, CONDUCTOR, CRISTALERO ETC. ETC. ETC.😀
Leave the stairs but add a second tier to the bathing platform?
I am on a FB group about tracker aluminum bass fishing fixing repair etc. I seem to be the guy to help with leaking boats. You mentioned in will my tub leak. I tell them reverse uno card take the junk you don’t want wet out and start filling your boat with water and look where it’s coming out. Fill your boat time. Black in white huh ok muppet
Take a look at Sail & Doxie new 45foot sailer. It has a clever adjustable swim platform.
So much hard work Sean, I get tired watching the vlogs. Proper boat restoration, unlike those frauds on ship happens, all they do is cut and glue pieces of wood together.😂😂
listening to your welding i think your wire feed is to high and a weld that sits on the surface and looks nice is NOT , i think you should grind them out and take your time with a slower wire speed, i just wish i was back in the U.K to help.
I’m hoping your cabinet carpentry skills are as good as your steel fabrication skills … enjoyed that episode… keep marching matey ..
Fixed stairs. Much safer in the event of an abandon ship type emergency! Enjoying the series! Great progress.
platform take to long up and down and how long will it last with salt water stairs are the way to go i think
Rising Platform – Not sure about private yachts but in the marine industry anything that is 'Man Riding' needs to be surveyed and certified. Check you are not giving yourself a long term headache for the sake of a little convienience.
I would look at a water based hydraulic system. That way if it leaked you don't contaminate the water. Found a company Hydoytron Engineering in GB. They say they can solve any problem or need! Haha..This might be something they haven't thought of
Movable platform sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, it would be cool but no way would i even consider it,
Good Sir, I don’t know what you do for a living but it HAS to be in sales. Not only did you convince a pretty lady to hitch her wagon to you she also got sold on this project! Masterful work Sir! Well done! Now, get it done and deliver!!!
I am sorry 'sir', but I can clearly see you in color. Even on this side of the world.
Nice chair not good for a lower back pain Shaun
Rachael is a watchmaker? You two never stop impressing.
you fitted the doorbell yet? 🙂
Always a lot of flittering between jobs and so much mess everywhere, maybe you should have a total clean and tidy and rip out and clear everything now, would make this project so much easier to do, even down to all that old wiring that is all over the place. Looking forward to seeing it progress👍🏽
Stationary steel steps would be the best shaun. It would be the wear and tear for me . Maintenance be alot for mechanical lift bud keep up tve good work . Take care, be well. 😊.
There are many talented people that watch your channel, some do this type of work, day in and day out. We understand that you are learning as you go, we do not criticize as everyone can learn something new every day. You may think it's funny to say some people are watching in "Black and white" or are of lower or lesser place in life or technology. I find it rude! A little more humility will get you further in life.
