Anbernic’s latest release, the RG 55G1 is obviously inspired by Nintendo’s Switch Lite. How much have Anbernic taken (and properly) executed the vision, does it matter? And more importantly, how good (or bad) is truly the 55G1? I’ll share my thoughts and more in this review, thanks for tuning in!

No device without a stick on top should be compare to the Switch.
Better off getting the RP5 for 70 bucks more (full price vs full price). Same screen size, but way more capabilities including Switch emulation.
I've got to say that this little Anbernic is super nice looking. I get that it takes inspiration from the Switch Lite; but, being more of an Android guy than a Nintendo bro, my first thought was "half price Odin 3". Especially so, in the color scheme you were sent.
Excellent review, Klef. I don't see myself buying one simply because I'm not a collector and I already have other things that do what this unit does. However, thanks to this review, I can recommend to people in the market for a mid-range handheld that they should at least check it out.

Yeah this GPU is going to be the death of this Handheld. We have Single-Core performance above a Unisoc T820 but the GPU ruins any potential this Handheld can potential have. 😫

It would be great if it ran Switch games but let's be honest, no one is going to pay MORE for this than a Switch Lite. It is what it is, a budget lookalike for retro emulation.
I'm convinced Anbernic already had this design in their production backlog and struck a deal with Qualcomm to use a Snapdragon chip for their devices for the first time, so they just shoved the only chip they were allowed access to into this shell. which is why it looks like a switch lite but can't play anything above 6th gen consoles.
I try to avoid your retro reviews like the plague because 1) I don't have a thorough understanding of them and don't want to get into another fantastically amusing rabbit hole, 2) because your reviews are so objectively good that makes me want to test the device for my self. That my friend, is the ultimate mission of a tech reviewer. Well done, another great review.
So…. the Retroid Pocket 4 is still on sale, and its better than this because it was always able to Play GC and PS2. Actually it was the first at a low price point. So this thing doesnt even manage to be more powerful than a 3 year old handheld with technically a better CPU. How does Anbernic manages to screws things up every time they tried to make a more high end handheld. 😮💨
It is a candy bar handheld that looks like a dozen others and performs better than most. Quit bitching.
Switch lite was the last true handheld.
I bought a RG Vita for like 90 USD on ALiexpress. To compare this to a RG Vita makes no sense considering the price.
So Anbernic has:
-Vita that can’t run vita games
-DS that can’t run DS games
-Switch lite that can’t run switch games

I'm on a coping journey with this one haha. The whole shenanigans of copying the Switch Lite designs, down to their marketing and the packaging is wild. I set my headcanon that this is Anbernic stretching their 476H instead. That way I set my expectations to what it really is. I don't mind not playing Switch games on it if I had one. In fact, if I have to get an Anbernic, it'll probably between this, the 476H or the Slide.
I honestly don't see who this is for seems like more anbernic prototype handheld slop for consumers to test until they come out with something that actually moves the needle/holds weight. Offtopic are you dutch by any chance? I can usually tell who my people are.
It functions well as a DS (side by side displays), GBA and PSP emulator, and handles home consoles up to N64 and Dreamcast with just enough performance headroom for widescreen hacks—same.as the older retroid pocket 3+
Great video Klef. Seems Anbernic is comfortable with stay in that middle ground to lower end tier on their devices. Not a bad place to be but was hoping for a little more here.
