You’d never notice these details but they are SAVING the château (ep. 168)

At Purnon, the story of restoration is written in even the smallest things – the intricate details in a piece of 18th century furniture, the tap of a stonemason’s hammer or the care taken to precisely hang wall paper on a surface that carries the subtle imperfections of the passage of time.

It is a story of craftsmanship – the remarkable skills of the team we work with every day to reawaken Château de Purnon, as well as the skills we have learned to bring authenticity to this remarkable project… each decision a small act of fidelity to the past.

  1. Since you live so far away from a major city, how do you find such amazing artist to work on this facility? Obviously, these are highly skilled people and it seems odd that there are so many this far from a city.

  2. Your talents that you have acquired throughout the restoration are amazing! I am recalling hanging wallpaper in my 150 year old home in Michigan with only 9 foot ceilings and you are on scaffolding! Our small town was known for its mineral baths so there are lots of stories about the people who built and lived in the homes.

  3. Love your videos — so much history and techniques of application are so very important! Also, your puppy's haircut is very cute! I know you mentioned it a few months ago, but what kind of dog is he? He seems part Portugese water dog?

  4. Such a fulfilling end to yet another project. You two have been so hands on during this entire process. The craft person's knowledge of historical processes is so almost overwhelming to hear. Fish glue, the special bridge and building finish, the gutters, wallpaper in the tea room. Seeing these four projects reach a final phase has to be so fulfilling for you two.

Our old farmhouse and others in the cotton farming community about 30 miles north of Dallas, Texas, USA, mostly just had lengths of wood of 5 to 12 inches wide for walls. The boards were hung horizontally. Mom wall papered for the community. Widths of canvas/heavy gauze were hung vertically using tacks like the upholster did. Mom's tack hammer had the same magnetic end. So this video brought back two memories. As for the papered walls, on windy days the paper would move ever so slightly as the wind came between the cracks of the wood. The wall paper in those days had a .5 inch overlap for a finished edge. No painting at edges needed.

Thank you again for taking us on this journey with you.

  5. AS a young person I had a pocket billiards table with much the same ball return system. I cant wait to hear the first break and the drop of balls. Maybe one day I will be able to enjoy a nice glass of port and a round or two on it .

  6. Watching the artisan using a sponge to apply the final color to the render seemed a little over the top. That is until I saw the final result to the bridge. With the lions now back on their perch, the bridge is truly a work of art. Especially so when I go back to videos before the work on the bridge began. It’s hard to believe it’s the same entrance.

  8. I would definitely say that you can now consider yourself a professional wallpaper hanger. The size of the walls and details in the paper are more than most wallpaper hangers would want to tackle. Everything is really coming along and I wish I was going to be there for your open house.

  9. I love all the steps taken, big and small that have brought you here. But every time i see the roof in all its splendour, it brings a tear to my eye. Its crazy because im not a crier. Haha. But the roof! Brilliant, just brilliant.

  10. Oh my goodness the stone guttering is such a huge time consuming project! I cannot believe that anyone would have actually done that at all. Kudos to all of the stone masons, they are truly amazing!

  11. Thank you for your beautiful and respectful story telling. This billiard table story is just one of so many that has brought tears of heart felt joy to my eyes. I am so happy that you share these journeys with us. I admire you both so much.

  12. These videos, the presentation etc., are all so professional but still personal. The restoration work is so impressive and encouraging to see the skills still available in France. This is one of my favourite channels. One I never get annoyed or bored with.

  13. I'm so happy for you both. Looks like everything is coming together beautifully. Knock on wood. The contrast of walking into a finished room from a worksite in progress must be so satisfying. The minimalist grandeur of the billiard room's wall contours is impressive & very satisfying. Imagine gentlemen in 18th Century attire outdoing each other in measured elegance as if on stage for one another. A refined masculinity that is particular to French men. Can't wait for the reveal!

  14. Guy's I am lost for words, the transformation I have witnessed since I started watching your updates is incredible! You and your team have done a marvellous job restoring this beautiful chateau, Well done one and all! 🥰

  15. I could really have used the knowledge of painting the wall where the two strips of wallpaper will go because each strip touched the other when I put them there and somehow they separated now. Why didn’t you tell me this earlier😂!!
