Just How Much Faster Is An Un-Restricted E Bike Than A Road Bike?

Electric bikes are becoming more and more popular worldwide, but are subject to strict laws and regulations to make them legal to ride in public. We already know how fun they are to ride, but just how fast can you ride an unrestricted e-bike? We took Hank and Conor to a private race track to compare it to the speed of a road bike.

  1. Why are e-bikes limited to 25 kph in the EU when, going downhill, you can easily reach over 50 kph? E-scooters overtake you doing at least 40 kph, not to mention road bikes, which can go even faster on a straight road with little or no protection.

So much for the European Community, which is really starting to piss me off nowadays. It’s like living in a country run by a mad dictator.

If the speed limit on E-Bikes in the USA is 32 kph, what’s the difference between there and here, apart from having more stupid politicians here?

  2. I do think it is cool that the unrestricted electric bike can go pretty fast but I do think if people do want to take electric bike racing seriously they might have to make a separate race just for ebikes

  3. I just purchased a Pinarello E Nytro 9 top of the line. Soooo fun but they claim 100km (60 miles) of range. I rode it yesterday for 35 miles (about 50 km) and ran out of battery. I was changing also between level 1, 2 &3 of assistance. 🙄

  4. This has got to be the stupidest comparison you guys have ever done. Why don’t you compare a Maserati to a jogger next? After all, you are comparing motors to humans. One of the main attractions of a bike for me is knowing that I am getting there under my own power, with an elegant, simple, and efficient machine. If I want a motor, I’ll get a Harley.

  5. I think they should maybe add a legal class based on Max power output. Make a legal class of e bikes that just get to have 150 watts or so. That you can ride as fast you want…

Heck even 100 watt would be sufficient. Imagine getting 100 watt added wherever you go. That's basically the difference between me and tour de France numbers

  6. I live in Vegas, NV, and have a mid-drive Cannondale Topstone Neo 5 mid-drive class 3 28mph if I set it to Turbo but I usually just set it to eco mode and that will only take me to 20 mph top speed.

  7. If the middrive motor was restricted to 15.5 mph, the ebike would be obliterated as the drag once it cutoff would make it impossible to get much above the cutoff speed. The solution is to use a hub motor that doesnt produce drag, but it's torque would be half as much.

The 15.5mph cutoff speed makes middrive motors useless on the road unless you happy staying below 15.5mph

  8. my bike ia a S-Works 2024 Creo 2. 28 lbs: The bike is efficient enough to be ridden in analog mode: and the power modes can assist with climbs and rest periods. For instance the other day I started a Road ride with 144% and ended with 122% on a 27 miles ride. Yesterday I did a short 18 mile Gravel ride in 29 degree Werther started with 119% ended with 113%. This bike could easily be used for 100mile plus rides without battery depletion. its a complete joy to ride. besides my Trek Rail 9.7 eMTB the Creo is the best purchase I have ever made and has produced the most joy. A great way to stay fit while producing the maximum joy.

  9. This isn't good for bike manufacturers for the general cycle retail market. A normal cheap unrestricted 250 watt upright commuter bike, costing just over £1k has a faster average speed, particularly where there are a lot of hills involved, than a very expensive carbon road bike, costing up to 10 times as much, which only matters, if you are a dedicated road cyclist or racer. Most long distance commuters or average cyclists aren't bothered. The speed limiter on my E bike, can easilly and quickly be raised or lowered on the phone app, in case it needs altering quickly ? The battery lasts for well over 20 miles unrestricted. ( obviously where permitted ).

  10. As you mention anything over 15.5 its supposed to be registered as a motor vehicle, but if you get caught on lets say a throttle bike doing 30mph the police will try and possibly take it off you but they can only do that if its a vehicle but as its not registered it becomes a piece of machinery and youre not a rider but an operator of said machinery if you relay this to them and they confiscate it you can prosecute them for theft.

  11. I thought that was the WHOLE reason for BREXIT …freedom from EU rules and regulations (of course it wasn’t , Westminster has its own marvellous tradition of interventions, red flag anyone !)

  12. UK and EU ebike laws are beyond completely ridicules but more importantly, super dangerous! Those laws create a speed delta on the roads that are much more dangerous to everyone. Regulations made by regulators that are the best and brightest????? I think we all know certainly not!

  13. it didn't even look faster, buy a 1500w kit and then we are talking, if you were actually trying you would install a higher voltage battery (72v), and shorted the shunt wires in the controller.

  14. In my country, if your e-bike can go past the speed of 25kmh, it'll technically be considered an e-scooter and you need to wear a motorcycle helmet. Anywhere past 50kph, it's considered an e-motorcycle and you need a license and vehicle registration.

It's certainly risky to only wear your regular cycling outfit and helmet on this video

  15. Is this the Global Motor Cycling Network? An electric motor is a motor. A bike with any type of motor is a motorized cycle or motorcycle for short. Ebikes are NOT bicycles, pedals are irrelevant. e-bikes are motor bikes.

Can we get back to bicycles and leave out the motor cycles?
