I-5 South Closure: Portland, Vancouver commuters prepare for Monday gridlock

With Interstate 5 southbound closed at Portland’s Rose Quarter for the next five weeks, drivers are seeing the first real impacts during their Monday morning commute.

Drivers heading into and through Portland will be looking for alternate routes, and transportation officials warn that the ripple effects could extend into Southwest Washington.

The I-5 southbound closure begins just north of the I-405 split.

Drivers can take I-405 across the Fremont Bridge and continue through Portland’s west side. For drivers who stay on southbound I-5, Broadway-Weidler is the final available exit before the closure.

Southbound I-5 reopens just south of I-84. Drivers traveling west on I-84 can still use the ramp onto southbound I-5.

Northbound I-5 remains open, although ODOT says it could also experience additional traffic.

ODOT expects the worst congestion between 6:30-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.

  1. Hey, instead of sitting in EVEN MORE horrendous traffic than usual to finally reach home and get things done, just stop in to an overpriced restaurant for 2-5 hours and spend your money instead… for 5-15 weeks. Huh

  2. Oh lord, please teach the idiots how the zippered merge works. There are tons of idiots out there blocking the merge and trying to be the traffic cops when they really don't understand how the zippered merges work. What is wrong with these people?
Not really happy about this stupid i5 closure. It's absolute S show.

  3. Now this guy explains things very, very well. Love the "zipper merge" term! I really appreciate that she said "Broadway and Weidler is your last chance to make an exit". This was well done reporting. 👏👏👏

  4. Yeah this bridge project is going to be managed terribly by Oregon. Just look at how the Oregon socialist government did a terrible job with public education. 9000 students left Oregon schools this year. Oregon students ranked almost the worst in the nation despite having $21,000 funding per student. And Oregon had to eliminate the high school graduation assessment test to get even a pathetic 83% to graduate. Oregon public education is awful. Only the rich students going to private schools stand a chance.

  5. Zipper merge is the stupidest idea they've come up with so far. It encourages people to not wait in line and make fools of the people that do wait in line. If you follow this thought process to its logical ending, everyone that's in line should move into the lane that's ending and attempt to merge in. Talk about a traffic accident waiting to happen

  6. Five weeks is just a small taste of the Albina restoration project that will restore nothing. The new build plan looks like your average modern crap buildings, nothing at all like the old neighborhood that is gone and always will be.

  7. Grooming drivers for when you close I-5 bridge to add bicycle lane, Max lanes, but not any additional car lanes 😅😂 but the bill will be great!!!!
