Why the Taxpayers’ Union wants government spending slashed

The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union is the largest taxpayer advocacy group, per capita, in the English-speaking world. They’re known for high-profile stunts over public spending, like Porky the Waste-Hating Pig in 2017, Nicola’s Fudge in 2025, and for the 2026 general election, the group have launched a Bribe-O-Meter tracking the projected fiscal footprint of political parties’ campaign promises.

Executive director Jordan Williams joins Jack Tame to give his election year pitch for no new taxes and a smaller government.

Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

  1. The TPU does not represent the 80% of taxpayers who believe that taxes levied should be collected progressively. They have been demonising the paying of taxes for 13 years now by constantly implying that 50% of taxes gathered are mispent by either fraud, corruption or incompetence.. A more apt name for the TPU is the Taxation Propaganda Unit. Their propaganda narrative is to erode trust in how taxes are spent by vilifying and denigrating governments who spend taxes on things they don't agree with . They know full well that this erosion of trust may eventually cause many citizens to refuse to pay taxes because they have been persuaded that the collection of tax is illegitimate, immoral and akin to theft. Of course you will never hear the TPU reminding us that some of NZ's most successful investments have been from taxation. Think of state housing post WW2. Think of rehab loans to returned soldiers. Think of the ministry of works building our hydro electricity infrastructure. Think of our geothermal infrastructure. Think of our state pension. Think of ACC. Think of state funded education. Think of state funded health. Think of kiwibank. Think of the Treaty settlements giving Maori economic sovereignty for the first time in our history. Think of kiwisaver. Think of the Ultra fast fibre roll out. The list is long. Taxation investment is often the only option citizens have to fix things that private capital is reluctant or incapable of doing. The TPU does not want citizens to be thinking like this.

  2. I had my reservations with Jack , but his brutal approach regardless of left and right is brilliant. I am sold . NZ has become tribal and we need a healthy perspective

  3. Glad to see Jack is pulling this guy's head back in when he wants to gloss over details that have to be expanded on rather than him attempting to lead Jack off down the garden path.

  4. There is so much economic illiteracy in this country. Tame conflates "capital flight" with the flight of capitalists. Capital flight mostly occurs not when capitalists move overseas, but when their investment decisions deprioritise New Zealand companies, thus limiting productivity in New Zealand. To parody the old song, New Zealand is "a nice place to live but I wouldn't want to invest there." When Ireland cut corporate rates to 12.5% in 2003 their economy (and tax take) boomed.

  5. why are they talking about the superannuation bill when the very prosperous 'Cullen Fund' was set up specifically to cover that cost and as it stands is making way more than is being spent?

  6. A truly independent voice…..Don't even bother talking about Capital Gains Taxes, because there's not going to be any……And Jordan….please do yourself a favour don't invoke Trump as some sort of figure to follow in any sense at all, please, please, please…………We do not feel Jordan is a cheat or a liar and do not question his or TPU's integrity and we are supporters.

  7. A real shame Jack didnt push back on the capital gain double taxation claim. Capital gains are untaxed. There is no tax on the gain. You got $100,000 in gain in a year on a property, thats literally free of tax. While a worker who earned $100,000 in a year gets taxed over a quarter of it.

  8. Haters can say what they like – leftie losers, Jordon is right, we spend so much…funding his Thatcherite policies. 50% spending is on the accommodation supplement (landlord subsidies). NZ really is fucked. I’m so glad I left – it’s a dump now.
