The three companies which had their own 5G modems for their chips/SoC in 2018 were Huawei, Qualcomm & Samsung (it wasn't good). Apple managed to develop and introduce their own 5G modem only in 2025. Till then, they were using Qualcomm's 5G modem in their chips which came at a price.
Almost all sanctions and restrictions on Huawei was mainly to protect Qualcomm, cripple Huawei's AI development, etc. They were the main competitor to Qualcomm, their SoC, telecomm/5G race, AI.
Due to sanctions, Huawei was banned from using TSMC foundry/EUV machines to manufacture chips with their own 5G modems, EDA software/tools for chip design. etc. They were later "allowed"/forced to purchase 4G/modem chips from Qualcomm for their smartphones. Another good sales for Qualcomm, whose major share of global sales revenue comes from chip sales to China/Asia.
During the years when Huawei's smartphone sales was not much active, Huawei was concentrating on other technological innovations. One of them was AI and automobile sector, which they started before the sanctions was imposed. When most people wrote off Huawei as finished, the scene in China during those years was different. Huawei was spearheading the autonomous driving. They are the number one guys in autonomous driving in China/world, followed by other manufacturers. Even BYD uses Huawei's AI, ADAS, autonomous driving, night vision/Lidar, etc. When BYD's FangChengBao 8 (Leapord-8) was launched in 2024, it came with Huawei's ADAS 3.0. Newer versions 3.1, 3.2 etc was introduced in 2025.
In addition, most people are not aware that almost all major automobile brands like Audi, Bentley, BMW, Lamborgini, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Renault, Subaru, etc has patent licensing for using Huawei tech. Audi was not shy, their employees even posted videos of their meeting room during their trip to Huawei's HQ in 2023.
In the smartphone segment, after 5 years of silent hard work, in 2023, without any prior PR/notice, Huawei launched their Mate 60 with their own home built 5G (5.5G) modem/chip coinciding with the U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo's visit to China.
It was a remarkable launch which Huawei had waited for as it was their first premium smartphone launch after sanctions was imposed.
Mate 60 was the result of hard work that Huawei put into in developing their own EDA software/tools for chip design, developing their own EUV, DUV machines (via another subsidiary). Mate 60 was a new mobile with a new chip/SoC which was completely designed in house with their own EDA software and manufactured in Chinese foundry.
In 2027 or in the next couple of years, we will see Huawei's own EUV machine in commercial form which they developed and started testing in 2025.
