An easy way to prevent yourself from becoming a target for people like this is to immigrate legally so that you can get a job that doesn't pay in cash. When you are in the country illegally and are assumed to be carrying large amounts of cash, individuals like this are going to see you as a convenient target.
Those have to be the dumbest evil criminals in the USA. They made just about every mistake you can make while committing a crime.
