I'm wondering why you didn't separate the tank from the bowl before removing? Seems that is really heavy together.
Why don't you just take advantage of physics and dump a ton of water in there to create the suction? And then just stick a cup down there to block the steward gas? This is just pretentious for the sake of being pretentious.

what do sewer gases smell like? I have a musky, chlorine-like odour coming from my bathroom, it's definitely from the hole on the floor because when the toilet was being removed, they covered the hole and the smell was gone but after replacing it with a new toilet, the smell came back… any thoughts?
Where you get that liquid lock and pick up stick from ??
I just use one of black rubber gloves and pull it over wher the pan connector goes then any water goes in the glove .
