The 82nd annual Columbus Day Parade is set to step off Monday along Fifth Avenue, celebrating Italian American heritage and marking 250 years of Italian contributions to America. Mayor Mamdani is not expected to attend the festivities. The mayor recently posted a video on social media highlighting the journey of Italian Americans in the United States, but the video did not mention Christopher Columbus.

In 1493, he sent hundreds of Indigenous people to Spain to be sold as slaves.
His atrocities include Historical records document massacres, torture, mutilation, forced quotas of gold, and the use of hunting dogs against native populations.
Columbus actively permitted and facilitated the human trafficking of Indigenous women and girls.
