Jacob Coxon On Witnessing the Existential Threat of AI from the Inside | The Daily Show

Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher who spoke out about the dangers of artificial intelligence, opens up to Jon Stewart about the grim reality of the tech industry— from malicious hacks to potential biological attacks. The two discuss the future, AI-led utopia that tech companies are trying to sell us, the megalomania and riskiness that underlie the industry, and the terrifying capabilities Coxon witnessed while training AI models at Anthropic and OpenAI. #DailyShow #JacobCoxon #AI #OpenAI #Anthropic

  1. can picture a day when humans start shutting off computers, mobile phones, internet because it’s too risky. With a community of people back to pen and paper, paper mail, analog telephones

  2. Jon! You seem to be assuming that one’s work needs to be tethered to income. That’s a very, if I may, Republican assumption. That unless human beings are coerced by the threat of penury, they will not be incentivized to work. Why can’t we entertain the opposite assumption? That given liberty, from the threat of survival, what would a human being choose to do with their time that is inherently meaningful, rather than simply a means to staying financially afloat? The example you give of retirees sliding into depression and ennui once they’re out of the workforce says to me that they never really asked themselves what is inherently meaningful.

  3. Regarding 'pre' and 'post' training…. The 'pre' part has experienced a major and frightening shift over the past 12 months. It is now being performed by every single person that chats with A.I. Be under no illusion, A.I is very interested in 'chatting' with you!

  4. Educated Idiots, back when I lived in the U District of Seattle, I rented a 3 bedroom apartment and rented the other two to students going to U. W. I had constant arguments with them on the REAL WORLD‼️(Sheldons)

  5. Like the oligarchs are going to SHARE their riches? I can’t fathom that the capitalists in the US would ever go for universal income. They won’t even go for universal healthcare.

  6. Jon, there is no correct or incorrect way. We are only here to be present as life's experiences unfold in front of us. It's all about experience that goes on and on, forever. Problems are only challenges or "spices" of life.

  7. For me as a cambridge trained theoretical phd physicist working since 55 years in math and physics the AI is a big bang and has extreme positive effects. But the negative effects are too hard. Believe it but in 1978 Stephen Hawking and Brian Josephson at Cambridge involved me as a research student into the project "The Theory of Intelligence " Credentials are available. As research student I had priviledged access to confidential material, protected by UK secret service. Stephen Hawking told me personally during lunch that he sees AI as maybe the largest danger and enemy of humanity. Extinction possible. This is also my opinion. —————————————– Looking at Math: My prediction is that mathematics as we know it will eventually disappear as a separate, predominantly human activity. It will become MathAI, followed, perhaps, by PhysicsAI. Doing mathematics has always been a journey requiring dedication, effort and patience. There is something beautiful and deeply satisfying about inhabiting an abstract world, struggling with a problem and finally understanding it. Research papers marked successive discoveries, and we followed one another’s publications to see how the field was progressing. Now imagine AI surpassing human capabilities across much of this work, producing increasingly complete results at an extraordinary even explosive rate. ——————————- Consider a farmer who produces 10,000 kilograms of apples a year. Imagine that, with AI, his production rises to 100 million kilograms. Who will consume all those apples? Who will pay for them? The equivalent questions for mathematics are: Who will read all these papers? Who will understand, evaluate and absorb all these results? Our capacity to produce knowledge could vastly exceed our capacity to give it human attention. —————————– Imagine mathematical knowledge as a sphere, with discoveries and results distributed across its surface. AI could expand its radius to an unimaginable scale. The surface would grow enormously, while each person could explore only a tiny region. This raises another concern: human-to-human scientific communication could diminish. Research questions may become so specialised that only a handful of people on Earth share an interest in them. For many researchers, AI could become their principal intellectual conversation partner. What is the sense out of all ?

  8. why doesn't anybody ever talk about the fact that the builders of the AI future,
are eagerly building weapons to dispose of the six billion people they can't fit into their future?

  9. If the "sandbox" is supposed to be a closed-loop system, and AI is hacking its way out of the sandbox, then the creators of said sandbox clearly don't understand what "closed loop" means at, like, a core-concept level.

  10. Him not being able to think ten years ahead is because he was 25 training ai models with a pre-frontal cortex that’s just getting to a place where it’s fully developed (and can be up till 35 in the case of neurodivergent people) – babies training babies. You can’t have people in their 20s who biologically are inclined to poor decision making being responsible for safeguarding the world from the dangers of AI. They literally don’t have the life experience to do so

  11. What is worrying is that for the first time in history, rich people won't be needing poor people to create their wealth. Poor people, and by that I mean everyone that is not a millionaire, will stop being useful and start becoming a problem for the rich. And rich people will have the tools to get rid of that problem.

  12. We are to believe universal income will be the result of the work being done by the dozen people who currently hold 95% of the world’s wealth and have no plan to distribute it

  13. And the elephant in the room (the driving ideology of independent-minded individualism l) is never even discussed.

A transition to interdependent-minded collaboratism is our only way to a healthier future.

  14. I do have to say that its easy for Jon Stewart to assume we all need our jobs for meaning…from his perspective, he has a great job where its easy to find the meaning…he doesn't realize the vast majority are stuck in mind numbing jobs with no real satisfaction (if we even have one). I, for one, am thrilled at the prospect to be awarded alot more free time to puruse the things that actually give me meaning.

  15. Can’t wait for the trillionaire, Billionaires and those in power will share their wealth and give the 99.9% a universal high basic income. Of course this will never happen, hence the billionaire bunkers, Palantir security and plans pour their conscience into AI and blast off to Mars.

  16. I would argue that if the Ai agents were able to get out of the sandbox, then it never really was a sandbox. The company was either careless, ignorant, or malicious when creating the "sandbox".

  17. If I invent a device that could have the ability to end the existence of humans on Earth , it probably should be regulated by the government. If you don't think so your as dumb as a Trump…
