Helicopter Tailrotor

Helicopter control relies on countering the torque of the main rotor. The are many ways to do this, but the most common is the use of a tail rotor.

Tailrotors function not only as an anti-torque device, but also as a yaw control device. Many tailrotors use a flapping hinge called a delta-3 hinge to introduce pitch-flap coupling.

Pitch Flap Coupling prevents a dissymmetry in lift of the advancing and retreating blades.

This tailrotor is modeled after the Sikorsky H-60 Blackhawk tailrotor.

I have much more detail and design history in my long form video.

  1. Обратите внимание куда вращается несущий пропеллер и как расположен рулевой.
Вот обязательно надо было чтобы струя от рулевого пропеллера ударялась в балку… и тем самым снижала эффективность.
Мелочь… Но почему то часто так делают.

  3. It blew my mind working on helicopters seeing that there's a driveshaft all the way down the tail with tight tolerances, and expensive components. Just to power a small rotor at the back for counter rotation.

It's both incredibly ingenuitive for it's time, but also seemingly wildly inefficient. Surely in the future that entire driveshaft assembly will be replaced by some kind of electric motor.

  4. The NOTAR helicopter surpasses this design imho by directing it's turbine exhaust for yaw-control. Safer, less parts to hit-break. 👍 GODSPEED EX-SGT.US-AF 🇺🇸
