Which Tesla Model Y Variant Should You Choose? | RWD vs AWD

In this video, we put the rear-wheel drive Tesla Model Y against its all-wheel drive counterpart to find out which variant is a better choice for an everyday vehicle. The comparisons include:

• Power and acceleration
• Traction and stability
• Performance in slippery conditions
• Price and efficiency
• Comfort and everyday usability

We also test whether the Model Y can oversteer with only the rear motor active – and if Tesla’s traction and stability systems intervene when the rear wheels begin to lose grip.

  3. That is not accurate representation of RWD acceleration. A premium RWD model Y 0-60 is 5.4 sec not 7 sec that your test is showing by disabling front motor of a AWD model.

  4. I based my choice on advice from the Tesla employee in the shop. She asked me my normal mileage and road type. Based on that, ( mostly urban driving with the odd motorway trip thrown in), she suggested RWD would be best for me, and I’d only be wasting my money buying something I didn’t need! So RWD it was, and I’ve no problem with it. Another thing she pointed out was, because I can’t home charge, the LFP battery would be a better option because I can’t charge to 100% every week, at my local Supercharger, and that would do. It has pretty much.

  5. ANY Tesla is extremely fast! Any model, any configuration. The RWD is all normal people need. But of course Tesla caters to everyone. Save your money. Buy a RWD.

  7. I’ve got a 2026 Y Performance. I’m only 26, so I love having some fun with it 😂😅. RWD or Long Range looks way too basic to me 😂

  8. en españa la diferWDencia de precio es de tan solo 2000€, por esa diferencia compraria la AWD, lo he probado y me encanta, seria el coche q hoy en dia me compraria si tuviera el dinero….

  9. I chose awd because , performance, traction, better speaker system and plusher on the inside door panels. Plus im getting acceleration boost . I love mine , best car iv ever had.

  10. "A factory RWD should be slightly quicker?" Mine does 2 seconds (TWO) whole seconds less than your disabled AWD, from 0-100 km/h. Your video is dishonest performance-wise. You are comparing the performance of the former SR RWD (now Standard RWD) and not the LR RWD, which does 0-100 in 5.3ish seconds, so just 0.7 seconds less than the AWD. Tesla states the same power for both versions, but it's clear that they are not putting the same HP at the wheels. I expected more in-depth analysis from you guys.

  12. I don't understand why they offer RWD. FWD is much safer for slippery road conditions. AWD is overkill for most road driving purposes. Quite funny seeing people in warm climates driving AWD who decided the extra $5k was worth it

  13. The best choice is the 255 kW (347 hp )Premium Long Range RWD version. Faster than the version rwd of this video and more efficient than the two versions presented here. That applies to Europe, of course.

  14. AWD is always better than RWD. I have both currently.

2025 Model 3 Long Range (RWD)
    2022 Model Y Performance
    Acura RDX A-Spec SHAWD
    Audi A4 Quattro

I've had a few RWD sports cars in recent years. They are nice only on the track. With my MYP there's a track mode that enables the driver to change the bias from front to rear.

You don't have to live in a snowy climate or drive balls to the wall all the time to experience the benefits of AWD. Safety, effortless acceleration, and grip (even on dry tarmac).

With RWD you have to explain to yourself or random internet strangers (see some of the comments here) why you settled for RWD if there was an option to get that vehicle in AWD.

Why did I choose the Model 3 RWD if I'm such a lover of AWD? Price, availability at the time of the expiring federal EV tax credit in late 2025, and I already have a few AWD vehicles. I regret buying the RWD version, but it's a very nice automobile and much more refined than the first generation Tesla Model 3 and Y.

  15. the new RWD long range now has tesla’s own 4680 battery, which isnt great…
its smaller thats why now the RWD has less range, u can see that on the tesla website and fast charging is also slower..
and de audio in the AWD is much better.
