ZVERNEC, ALBANIA – On the doorstep of a Jared Kushner-linked development site, a group of determined villagers set out in late May to protest barbed-wire fencing preventing their access to a coastal peninsula.
A video of the scene captured security guards punching one resident in the throat and dragging him along the beach by his arms. The incident sparked outrage and inspired a nationwide protest movement dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution,” with demonstrators calling for an end to the plans for a luxury resort and for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
