Aluminum Extrusion Tapping: Worker Using a Power Drill to Cut Internal Threads in a Workshop

Machining aluminum extrusions uses a tapping tool to create accurate internal threads inside pre-drilled holes.
Aluminum tapping prepares the extrusion for bolts, fittings, brackets, and other threaded hardware used during assembly.

The extrusion is firmly clamped to prevent movement while a powered drill rotates the tap into the existing hole. Cutting edges on the tap gradually shape the internal thread profile while aluminum chips are removed from the opening.

This method provides a fast and repeatable way to add threaded mounting points without installing separate nuts. Its advantages include compact connections, cleaner assemblies, and efficient fabrication. However, incorrect alignment, excessive speed, or poor chip removal can damage the threads or break the tap inside the workpiece.
