The higher Ren Calloway turns his dial, the faster his mind runs, and the slower everyone else seems to move. Time itself never changes. Only his experience of it does.
At Level 6, a dropped pen’s half-second fall lasts about 8 seconds for him. At Level 10 his clock runs 1,000 times faster: one second feels like more than 15 minutes, and four seconds like 1 hour, 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Ren’s dial is fiction. Real human reaction time is about 0.15–0.25 s, and nothing known can speed up thought like this. The clocks on screen are arithmetic on the story’s own rule.
