It Could Fly at 100 km/h—but Missed the Other Drones

How did TU Delft’s MonoRace race through an indoor gate course at up to 100 km/h—and what happened when other AI drones shared the airspace? This original schematic explainer shows how a forward camera, an IMU, a drone model and known gate geometry helped estimate motion. The paper reports a third-place finish in a separate four-drone race and says MonoRace could not detect or avoid rival drones before a collision. The competition took place in April 2025; the research paper was published in October 2026.
