There are two Dan Sullivans on Alaska’s U.S. Senate ballot, and now the Justice Department has sued over it.
The DOJ filed a lawsuit on Thursday, Oct. 22, asking a federal judge to block Alaska from certifying its Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan loses and votes for the other candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan (no party label on the ballot), could have made the difference. President Trump told reporters he ordered the suit. Alaska’s courts had already ruled that Daniel J. Sullivan can stay on the ballot. In the August primary: Mary Peltola (D) 49.5%, Sen. Dan S. Sullivan (R) 41.4%, Daniel J. Sullivan 2.5%. Election-law experts say the case stands on shaky legal ground.
