Aerodynamics Deep Dive, a remedial series for student pilots: the why behind the rules, with DA40 NG, C172S and DA42 NG examples — episode 7: Left-Turning Tendencies: P-Factor, Precession and the Critical Engine.
Ask a student why the airplane needs right rudder on the takeoff roll, and the usual answer is a single word, torque. That word hides four separate effects, and they do not peak at the same moment. Torque reaction, the spiralling slipstream, P-factor and gyroscopic precession each have their own cause, their own direction and their own time to matter. In this episode we take them apart one at a time, draw P-factor blade by blade, watch precession act only while the pitch is changing, and then carry the same physics to a twin, where it decides which engine is critical. By the end, four questions will tell you which one is pushing your nose left.

Lessons and tools used in this episode:
Examples: DA40 NG (and C172S / DA42 NG where noted) numbers from their flight manuals, as in the site lessons; the curves are teaching models.
Educational material for pilot ground training — not for flight. Your aircraft flight manual and the current regulations always come first.
