Japanese Curry is easier than you think! 🥢

Tonkatsu Curry (Pork Cutlet) is one of my favorite comfort foods. It’s one of the dishes my friend and I became a bit obsessed with after our first trip to Japan years back. Unfortunately in North America, it can be tricky to find a high quality version, but luckily it’s not too hard to make one yourself! 🥢 Happy eating!

Recipe (3-4 servings):
1 large yellow onion
1 russet potato
2-3 large carrots
1 box of japanese curry mix (Golden Curry 3.2 oz)
1 to 1.5lb boneless pork loin chops (enough for 2 cuts ½ – ⅔ inch thick)
1 ¼ cup all purpose flour
1 ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp salt
Vegetable oil (for frying)

  1. I know it takes more time but I like to thinly slice my onions and caramelize them and then in a separate pan, cook my potatoes and carrots to give them a nice color, then simmer it all together in the pot with that curry block, butter, chicken bouillon, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, and tomato paste, and blend it with an immersion blender until it’s smooth

  2. I usually make my curry with chicken, then in addition to the potato, onion and carrot I'll toss in some zucchini to bulk it out and water chestnuts for a nice textural crunch. I also like adding a bit a chili flakes to up the heat level and replace some of the water with coconut milk.

  3. I just made this. I subbed out the potato for butternut squash, sliced up baby carrots, sliced a whole medium onion, added sliced Bella mushrooms. I use stew meat marinated in red wine to tenderize it. You have to do this in layers: browned meat, set aside. Next onions until tender, add mushrooms, then carrots until soft, add the meat then the squash; add the beef stock (1 quart). Bring to a simmer and cook about 15 minutes or so. Then add the cubes of curry. Stir until the curry cubes are melted. Make your rice, if you haven't already. I use an Instant Pot for mine. Came out great.

  4. Wow easy and straight forward. I've made curry from scratch my whole life and I finally got my hands on the golden curry blocks.. and have no idea how I'm supposed to make it ha ha ha! This helped a lot

    子供はバーモント、20代はジャワ、年を取ればゴールデンがうまくなる
    少し値段は高いんだが日本の市販のカレールウで横濱舶来亭ってのがあるんだがこれが1番うまい

  6. just wanted to compliment the energy of this video! it feels so relaxing, almost like watching a chef in a cafe show you how they make their dishes. its so relaxing and im absolutely in love with it!

  7. I found a great recipe for homemade online that tastes like the curry cubes….if you get the right curry powder. I can't afford it, but a local Wal-Mart carries the curry cubes now. So i can get my curry fix easily.

I like to use a cup of decaf coffee on occasion instead of water. And apple sauce or grated apple because i love apple and pork. I sometimes use fried zucchini when the garden provides. But tonkatsu is traditional for a reason! Very yummy!

  8. I have a rice cooker so I just steamed the veggies with the rice, boil water and add the blocks and veggies

I dont eat pork and don't like chicken much, so I air fry tofu. So 👍

  9. Has anybody else seen the "Contains LEAD" warning on the back of the Golden Curry boxes?

Was gonna grab one of those the other day, but put it back immediately after seeing that…
