Why No One Can Copy ASML?

Why can’t anyone copy ASML? Every advanced AI chip, from Nvidia’s GPUs to the chip in your phone, is printed by an EUV lithography machine that only one company on Earth can build. This is the story of how ASML went from a leaky shed in Eindhoven to the most important company in the semiconductor industry, and why not even China can catch up.

Inside the machine, a laser hits a drop of molten tin fifty thousand times a second to make extreme ultraviolet light. Zeiss mirrors so smooth that, blown up to the size of Germany, their biggest bump would be a tenth of a millimeter. A wafer table that stops to within the width of an atom.

In this animated explainer we cover:
• How Philips spun out ASML in 1984 with seventeen machines nobody wanted
• Why being too poor to build its own parts became ASML’s biggest advantage
• Twinscan and immersion lithography: how ASML beat Nikon and Canon
• Why Intel, TSMC and Samsung paid for EUV together
• How an EUV machine works, and what High-NA EUV changes
• Why the blueprints are not enough: Zeiss, Trumpf and 5,000 suppliers
• China, SMIC, export controls and the race to build a copy
• How AI demand made ASML’s order book longer than ever

  3. For China, this is a matter of pure survival. That’s why they’ve built a machine that gets pretty close to what ASML does, even if it’s not quite on their level yet. Sure, it’s not as compact or efficient as ASML's, but it proves they are making real progress. Still, the Chinese are known for reverse-engineering everything they can get their hands on. I actually read somewhere that they once took apart an ASML machine to copy it, but couldn't put it back together and had to ship it back to ASML for repairs!

  4. china already surpass and elon musk already bulding factory going to get all chip manufacture 90 percnt supply of 2035. europe and their stupid machine goingto trash bin

  5. Many countries trying to crack this technology, like China, India, Russia, United States and so on. One day there would be a second company would start the race.

  6. China is the only country capable of producing its own lithography machines. Dutch lithography machines require components and materials from multiple countries, including Chinese components, rare earth metals, and strong magnets

  7. EU asks China not to sanction ASML supplier:

In July 2026, the EU included a number of Chinese companies in the 21st round of sanctions against Russia. China immediately retaliated and put 14 EU entities including Sindelhauser on the export control list, prohibiting them from obtaining Chinese rare earths and dual-use items. Sindelhauser is a small materials manufacturer located in Bavaria, Germany. It provides precision coatings and advanced materials to the ASML supply chain and "almost completely relies on China's rare earth supply."

Sanctions have disrupted the supply of its raw materials and could put the company out of business within months. Although ASML officially stated that Schindelhauser "is not a member of its supply chain," many media such as Bloomberg confirmed that it is part of ASML's supply chain. Once the company collapses, ASML's EUV lithography machine production may be affected.

In October 2026, EU Trade Commissioner Sefcovic visited China and discussed the "one-for-one" plan with China: the EU lifted sanctions on a Chinese company in exchange for China lifting controls on Schindelhauser. Both sides agreed to strengthen information sharing, but the plan has not yet been finalized.

The core logic of this incident is: China has demonstrated its potential influence on the European semiconductor industry in the fields of rare earths and critical minerals by accurately attacking weak links in the ASML supply chain.

  8. Even if the United States and Japan plundered TSMC, they would not have enough electricity, transformers, circuit boards, raw materials, rare earths, and artificial diamonds…

  10. No other company would have the 40 years of experience , failure and success ,but who said that a company need to start from scratch? The knowledge is there , most of them , the time uncover tmost of the discoveries , so it's not impossible

  11. aslında bunu neden merak ettim? Huawei kendi işlemcileri neden yavaş diye araştırdım. ASML ambargo koyup makineyi vermemiş onlara. Onlarda yani nanometre ile işlemci üretmemiş.
