G-Cans, Kasukabe, Japan: The Giant That Swallows Floodwater

Beneath Kasukabe, Japan, G-Cans creates an additional route for floodwater. Explore the 6.3 km tunnel, five shafts, pressure-adjusting tank and four pumps that discharge toward the Edogawa River.

The pumps’ combined rated maximum capacity is 200 m³/s (200,000 liters per second). This is a design capacity, not a measurement of the flow visible in the footage. The system reduces flood risk as part of wider river-basin measures.

Real G-Cans footage and photographs are combined with clearly labelled illustrative drainage clips and simplified explanatory diagrams. Archival material and separate CCTV camera views are not presented as one continuous real-time event.
