Grindavik Volcano Update – I Wish I Had Better News This Time!

I wish i could have something better to say about the village of Grindavik and the nearby magma accumulation, but things just don’t look good right now and the recovery will likely take way longer then we dared to hope for. The situation with the retrieval of the body from the fracture isn’t helping with the moral either, so things could look way better. the ideal situation would be to get this magma going somewhere out of harms way but the more we get of it, the worse situation could face us, and we honestly don’t need more uncertainty.

  1. Hæ Gylfi,Eitt lítið varðandi textann á þessu nýjasta myndbandi (Grindavik Volcano Update).Myndbandið er greinilega á ensku, en þú hefur stillt tungumál myndbandsins á íslensku í YouTube Studio. Þess vegna keyrir YouTube íslenska talgreininguna á ensku talið og býr til „Icelandic (auto-generated)“ texta sem er í raun mestmegnis enska (og stundum algjörlega óskiljanlegur).Afleiðingin er sú að þeir sem vilja íslenskan texta fá bara þennan brotna enska texta, jafnvel þótt þeir velji „Icelandic (auto-generated)“.

Ef þú breytir tungumáli myndbandsins yfir á English í YouTube Studio þá býr YouTube til eðlilegan enska auto-texta. Síðan geta allir (þar á meðal Íslendingar) auðveldlega notað Auto-translate yfir á íslensku.

  2. My heart is with the family and friends of the lost man who have been waiting so long for full closure, it's sadly a feeling I know and it is SO unsettling no matter how much time passes. The authorities concerned refusing to say anything makes it even worse. If they even came out and said that there is no safe way to look any further, it would help. Personally, I think they ought to allow a memorial to the lost man as close as possible to where he went into the ground – and not charge the family for its placement since they have been kept in the dark for so long after his disappearance!!
While it's good to know that the port area of Grindavik is fully operational again, the continued "not knowing" about what is to come is not the best of news for the area. Personally, I think the InSar mapping gives the best clue as to what is currently happening below ground, especially given the lack of earthquakes.
My thanks as ever, Gylfi, from the land of ancient volcanoes, Scotland

  3. Three years are a long time.
I hope they will find his bones someday soon , so that the family can mourn the loss properly and get some kind of peace…😢
    Not to know is devastating…🥺

  4. I’ve always been so impressed by the utilities and local gvt blue collar workers who rush toward natural disaster areas such as before an expected huge hurricane, ice storm, volcano in this case, etc, ready to work under extremely physically challenging conditions. Meaning risking their health and even lives. We take their bravery for granted and they do indeed have to be exceptional people to take on those job responsibilities. That said, I don’t think they should be taken advantage of either.

  5. Isn't it possible to fix an LED light to a microdrone and fly it down there? Was this already done? Is the while surface down there explored and you would have to dig?

  6. Is the work of Loki , maybe. You guys have been living with Volcano's for ???? years or Longer ??

the ground you have up North is always active & lacking in manners.

Your Government must have a dedicated "Acts of The Gods Department" that works fluidly & effectively.

You are a very creative lot up there.

or call International Rescue & see if they pickup. ;>

  7. if I lived in Grindavik, I don't think I would ever want to go back there. The idea that one day the ground around my might just split open and begin spewing lava is terrifying.

  8. I don't understand why people want to live and build houses right on the mid atlantic ridge. This simply asks for big problems. Yes Grindavik is a nice place but also very dangerous geologically. I was there a year ago saying Grindavik is doomed unfortunately. And in fact also Reykjavik is very questionable….

  9. 2:39 the fissures still freak me out even after all of this time has passed.

I find I'm still upset about the man who was lost, I still tear up when I think about it. I can just imagine how upset his relations are if, like you said, they still don't have the answers they deserve.
My heart still goes out to them. 🕊

I'm remembering back to late Nov '23, when nobody truly knew what was going to happen to this town. The shaking was scaring the residents and the world started watching, wondering what was going on.
I hand-hooked a rug to memorialize Grindavik's bravery in '23 and beyond. Quite a unique people you are on that island!
    🤗
Peace to you and your country. 🔥 🧊

  10. Thank you for the uodate Gylfi, even though the outcome of the search for the missing gentleman was not what everyone wanted, especially for his family. Thinking of you all 🙏

  11. My takeaway from this is you are upset that there is no absolute science to tell you what is going to happen. I don’t know if what you want is possible in volcanology or seismology. Searching for someone who may be alive warrants risks, unfortunately risking living souls for a body doesn’t.

  12. Hi Gylfi!
It's sad to hear, that the gentleman isn't found. I hope he one day will be found, that the family and friends can give the man a funeral.
One way or the other, the outcome of an eruption can be dangerous as you explained.
Let us hope that Grindavik will be out of the woods, they've had thier difficulties when the whole town got closed after the devastating earthquake swarm.
It's interesting to see what's happening with the peninsula and thanks to you, for keeping us updated on this, Gylfi!
I wish you a nice weekend!
    Best regards from Denmark 🇩🇰

  13. Just another thought. I wonder if the weight of this coming winters snow on the Uplands region forces downward subsidence on the Upland areas and squeezes out the new eruption over the winter in the lowlands peninsula. I know when i shovel snow its darn heavy! Just a thought. Waiting now for a winter eruption.
