InfiMaker sent me their brand new K1 desktop 5-axis CNC to test before its public launch, so I made the same hammer head three times, once in oak, once in brass, and once in stainless steel, to really put this 5-axis CNC machine through its paces. In this video I cover the full CNC machining workflow, designing the part in Fusion, setting up the toolpaths, running tool changes on the automatic tool changer, and machining hard metals like stainless steel on a desktop CNC machine, something that used to require an industrial machine shop. I share the mistakes I made along the way, what I loved about this 5-axis CNC router, and what still needs work in a machine that’s still in beta.

  2. I retired from a tool & die business. When we invested in CNC that are made with huge capacities but with only 3 axis, we couldn't believe how it changed the whole machining process. Now to see something like this that a person with a small shop can create something amazing. I'm curious to see the price tag. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I find AI is great for quick testing or idea generator instead of making the final product. I'd like to see something with using cheap material and say "give me a mug with a dainty handle top and wide flat handle bottom", then we'd get to play with it in reality and feel out if it does what we need it to. Or when working on a project, I find the AI will generate something I like, then I follow it back to the source to learn more from there.

  4. Machinist here! Have they talked about pricing? I know its a kick starter project but this could be a really cool tool… if the price is right.

  5. Have you tried any more complex 5 axis toolpaths? The hammer, while it uses the 4th & 5th axis for positioning prior to a 3 axis cut, I didn't see much of it being used dynamically. 5 Axis CAM is usually expensive enough to make the machine look like a bargain. If they've built true 5 Axis CAM into the machine, it's a better value proposition.

  6. You have so much knowledge about making ANYTHING, amazing depth of experience, then adding in your creativity… one of my favorite channels. I am glad you’re staying away from AI. I am fed up with every major tech company (and my job, not in tech) pushing AI down our throats. I turn off every maker channel that starts using it.

  7. David, WOW just wow. This machine is unbelievable. A couple of things. 1 do you get to keep the machine or do you have to return it? 2, knowing that you have a classic car and the fact that you can sometimes have major problems with finding replacement parts, this machine will be a godsend as it basically gives you the chance of making your own replacement part's like engine item's from pistons to many other item's. I'm actually in awe of this machine as the potential is basically endless aslong as the software is right going forward. As alway's buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

  8. Thats pretty cool! But, it is not IMPOSSIBLE to make on a 3 axis machine. An angle head and lollipop cutters and it could be done. Its not easy tho. 😎

  9. Were you using InfiMaker's Infi-Flow cooling system? If so, what is it like? I'm curious about how it operates since I haven't seen much info covering it. Thanks for reading and for the great preview video on the machine.

  10. Will the operator need to know CAD or will there be premade files like we have with 3D printing? How expensive are the bits? How do you shape the area that's held in the clamp area (or does the design have to be above that area?? Lastly, how how small can and object be? In other words, how much detail? I'm considering this one, Topfab, or the IFMaker.

  11. This is amazing. I was recently sent a desktop CNC to review and everything about it was so bad I sent it back! I said the consumer needs a desktop CNC that's as easy to use as Bambu printers, this definitely seems to fit that, so I'm looking forward to seeing this technology trickle down to more budget conscious machines in time. Definitely seems like this company is in the lead though!

  12. Any American companies entering this field? Seems like it’s primarily Chinese. Lots of concerns out there about underlying “spyware” built into the software. Also wondering about all the BS legislation in various states (Washington fie example) that are passing with the intent of requiring any 3D prints / CNC files to be sent to a database for review prior to printing (this is a vast oversimplification of the legislation but look it up if you want more details). The story being sold on this legislation is that it’s keeping “ghost guns” from being made, but it goes much deeper than that cover. It’s a fascinating issue that a lot of people aren’t aware of and the legislative concept is making the rounds to more and more states and could be prohibitive for makers. Worth looking into if people are interested. I’m actually surprised more makers aren’t talking about it.

  13. It's definitely an interesting and impressive machine at first look. I'd be interested to see how it holds up over time and if the company is capable of good support for parts and repairs. Their website and kickstarter page is full of the typical techbro flowery language you always see from these startups, and most of them fail. Happy to be wrong though.

  14. Looks great. Early pricing isn't terrible, can't wait to see tools like this and the xTool to eventually get their pricing even closer to the hobbyist consumer budget.

  15. Very cool machine. I'm not the type with $6k hanging around for funsies, but if I can find a way in the future, this will be at the tippie top of my list. I've always imagined being able to use a 5-axis machine, and this is too cool.

  16. I was seriously expecting this thing to cost $15,000 or more. Even if you miss the early bird and pay full retail, it's still an insanely good deal for what it can do.

  17. Would be super excited for this if had literally any reason to own one. Way too many cool tools out there these days, if only I had worthwhile ideas for what to do with them.

  18. From a practical standpoint, I would have liked to see how you handled putting it back in the vise to finish the 6th side, or how you part it off if the end of the object is not already what you want it to be. Also can it do fluid cooling?
