B-24 Liberator wrecks discovered nearly 300 feet beneath the Adriatic reveal a remarkable investigation into five American bombers lost during World War II. In August 2022, Project Recover, U.S. personnel-accounting specialists, and Croatian partners surveyed approximately 24 square miles of seabed and located or relocated five B-24 wreck sites off Croatia.
But finding a B-24 Liberator was only the beginning. Researchers first examined wartime loss records, military documents, and local knowledge before deploying an autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with side-scan sonar, a magnetometer, and a high-resolution camera. Divers then inspected selected targets, documenting propellers, engine cowlings, wing sections, and other surviving aircraft components.
The real challenge was identification. Several Liberators had disappeared in the region, meaning investigators needed more than recognizable wreckage. Through historical comparison, archaeological documentation, and forensic analysis of physical evidence, three aircraft were positively identified. Those three B-24 Liberator cases were associated with 23 American servicemen who remained unaccounted for.
This was not a full salvage operation. The bombers stayed on the seabed, while small wreckage pieces from two sites contributed to the investigation. The discovery transformed anonymous underwater wrecks into specific historical cases and opened a more precise path for personnel accounting connected to the B-24 Liberator crews.
