Just finished this after going in blind. Wow, what a great show. Compelling mystery, terrific characters. Lots of awesome Scottish accents. I need many more seasons of this team unravelling cold cases
Season 1 was incredible! Better than most american tv shows out there. Acting on point, the humour wasnt forced and was actually funny. 10/10. Cant wait for further seasons!
Thought it was boring
Since 2013, Scotland Police have re/solved all homicide cases and, as in most places, murder case numbers are falling (Det.Supt.Moira fibbed when she said her team's caseload was going up): so we must get an answer in season 2, solving the murder of the young cop who was killed in Season 1?

IF YOU DON'T LIKE WOKE TROPES, THIS MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU! SPOILER ALERT!
So I had great expectations. I grew up on The X Files, my favorite show is True Detective season 1….so you know, I love me some good detective story with some mystery sprinkled in there. This might be great, solid cast, a time-proven premise. Then I see the Netflix logo and I start to feel uneasy. I watched one and a half episode and oh boy, the shitstorm is real. AGAIN SPOILERS.
Our story begins by introducing the main character (great delivery by the actor) who happens to be what? A recovering alcoholic. To show that he is a badass person the next step in familiarizing his character with the view is showing that is he is a HUUUUUGE asshole. More on that later. He is White (remember this, they are usually assholes).
Next we are introduced to another key player, a woman who is being harassed via e-mails and cellphone messages etc. You think she is some strong woman stereotype? By jolly you GOT it! She is non-other than a high-caliber prosecutor…but of course. She is wearing high heels and to ascertain her dominance, the directors thought it would be great if she walked in a way that every step sends her to the moon and back because that sort of walking shows strength. She has a brother who is no…not a nice and caring not, no, he is an autist just because.
At this point I'm starting to see a pattern but let's move on. A lot of cops do drink and a lot of good lawyers are females, why not. Next up, the local police high authority, who is kind-of-an asshole, probably happy to take government funding to establish a department for cold cases. Problem is, she establishes nothing, the department is a derelict place in the basement and the first time she goes downstairs to see what our "hero" is doing the only thing she seems to care is that she has to show some results to save face and receive more funding. She is not interested in the victims. So she is a strong woman, and an evil bitch…..oh she is also White. Hmmm. (btw gotta give credit where it's due, the interaction between her and the main character is very well done).
Let's not dwell on it (yet). Let's visit an honest, benign, smart and good willing person at last. You guessed it, he is not White, he is from Syria…the Middle-East. Is he a shop owner in London? Is he a working class citizen? Is he a criminal? (God no, this can't be). No, he is the gentlest most likeable person so far in the show (kudos to the actor), who is an IT expert (among other things). Guess how the White asshole cop treats him? Like dirt. But of course. This "poor" Middle-Easterner mops the floor, handles files, reads them and how unexpected….he manages to figure them out faster than our idiot White "protagonist". What an incident, right? White asshole detective still treats him badly….how sad and unexpected, right? Wrong…very much expected from Netflix.
Episode two, time to take a dump on the Church. A former detective (also coming out of recovery) is visited by our favorite hero…beforehand they call this normal looking Church a "cult". Guess what? This former detective who is now Christian (oh gawd) is an asshole and failed to probably investigate the disappearance of the woman we talked about. So he is dirt. Quick, what race is he? Yep, he is White. Evil fkn man.
Now comes the icing on the shit-cake. After showing this evil, former detective who is trying to find solace in Christian Faith there is a quick cut to our Syrian friend showing him during prayer. The scene radiates holiness, grace, great respect and honesty. Total contrast to what we have seen in the Church seen. So….Christianity bad, Islam good. This is where I had to stop watching here is why if you are interested:
I feel like this show is part of the lie that is spread in most shows. Tally the following point. Evil Whites: check. Inclusivity: check. Strong women: check. Diversity is good: check. No LGBTQ+ thing yet but I trust it will come soon. So you ask yourself…where have I seen these things? Answer: in every modern show whether it is a sci-fi film or an adventure movie. I would not have any problem with these things when seeing them, but to always have the same tropes is kinda disturbing. At best, I can say that I dislike the show because I have watched ten shows like this that feature the same crap. At worst, people realize that we are being fed propaganda. There are no coincidences in movies. And you know what, I don't hate liberals, I don't hate minorities (Whites are now a global minority). I recently watched Lodge 49 which checks out every trope I mentioned. It has diversity, has gay people, it has women who are very much in control (like Kim from Better Call Saul) and I loved the hell out of that show, wish they did not cancel it after two seasons. Why? Because of great acting and great writing. Nothing felt like it's there just to make fit the modern narrative more. It was a great show.
You can call me any name you want, I won't get offended. But careful, the British police might knock on your door if they think you offend a "protected group" by some random Facebook post. Careful…..oh this is a British show, lovely 🙂 Don't worry they have time to harass you while they are silent about grooming gangs and where they usually come from. Or bombings, or vehicular terror. Oh no….don't think about those things, Netflix got your covered. Just bury your head in the sand like in South Park, I'm sure there is a LCD tv there which has netflix on it so you can sleep easy 🙂 Good night and thank you for reading this long post.

Okay, why does it not say anywhere in the trailer that this is based of the book series by Jussi Adler Olsen? I think the series now has 11 or 12 books in it… Can't be that hard to just add it in the front 'based on'. I will watch it for sure. 😀

Why though?! This is one of the most ridiculously stupid crime thriller series I ever watched, and I watch all the time, all kinds. Except for the funnier aspects in the lives of the three police detectives, nothing goes right in this badly conceived drama. Please Matthew Goode, you could do much better! One season is more than enough!
