up, perpendicular to the plane the planets orbit in. Not because there is
nothing there. Because it costs more energy than flying past Pluto.
This one we look at why the solar system is flat in the first place, what is
actually above and below that disc, and why the only route up runs through the
Sun rather than away from it.

Ulysses launched in 1990 and is still the only probe ever built specifically to
leave the ecliptic plane. To do it, it had to fly out to Jupiter first and use
the planet’s gravity to throw itself sideways out of the disc. It carried no
camera. In February 2025 Solar Orbiter tilted out of the plane and finally sent
back images of the Sun’s poles, a view no spacecraft had ever recorded.
And there is still one photograph nobody has taken.

The planets are too far apart. You could never get that shot you're imagining. The probe would have to be so far out, you wouldn't see the planets, or couldn't tell them apart from the background stars. The thought is ridiculous, if you really think about it.
Name of the background track?
Based on astronomical models, the solar system rotates anticlockwise (aka counterclockwise) rotation. Not clockwise.
Ulysses left the plane by slingshot around Jupiter and another could do that and the slingshot again using the sun to slingshot again. Do it.
Could not the Earth & Moon be used to affect a vertical lift , at much higher velocities , tan via the planets ?
The there the issue on how does the probe , going vetical to the systems horizontal, stay navigationaly lined up with our solar system ? Its vertical , would need to correct to horozontal , unless the probes were ment to be " out there some wheee – lost in space " , to the systems trajectory ..
same thing would happen at the centre of the planet as happens to the gnat, getting to the centre of mass wouldnt be an easy job, i mean even without collision, you would settle to some kind of orbit, but the reason you feel gravity isnt because a mass pulls on you, its dislocation from your orbital position, right now you are higher and slower than orbital mechanics would usually allow, so your idea of down pulls you to your idea of null, if you was lower and faster than orbital mechanics allows, your down would look like my idea of up.. but its still not anti gravity, its you obeying the universal laws, if you dont, it drags on you, you feel it as weight, you have a mass blocking you and everything around you from finding the orbit it would love to be taking, if you orbit where you should, you feel no weight, spacetime isnt pulling you in either direction..

you need to remember, everything orbiting in space does so at the same speed, when you add energy you dont go faster, you add distance to your path at the same speed so you actually go slower by going "faster" relative to any target you have anyway. The slower your orbit, the faster your ground speed, if you could No-clip through the planet the fastest you could orbit would be right at the centre of mass, it would look fast from my fixed perspective at least, but if you map the solar system conically, you see all planets cross their horizon at the same speed, its just they are on different geodesics, adding speed changes your geodesic, its why everything looks so curved, every path you follow will look curved and feel flat, until you get up to the speed of light, then nothing around you looks flat apart from your vector.. causality is weird.. as am i, so i get it.. its hard to explain in ways people can follow tho
which way is up?
you already have so much angular momentum coming from being on a planet orbiting the sun, you will need to cancel out that relative velocity, or change it, its not cheap to go against the flow, its cheaper and easier to go out than in, its why Saturn has had more probes visit than Mercury, its why more men have stood on the moon than on the bottom of the ocean.. going in is way harder than out, its way less straight forward and Euclidean as it looks, the straight paths you see arent routes you can follow, unless you can take the geodesic of a photon, it requires you to go really fkin fast in any direction, go fast enough and you might flow faster than the universe, seeing it play out in reverse in your rear view mirror, you might eventually breach an event horizon that seems to form as you exit, now you are aligned 180 degrees from normal, going between Minkowski and Einsteins side of the time cone..
think about how long mankind mastered some metals like copper, its only been 150 odd years that we were able to make our own ice… easier to go with entropy than to fight it, isnt it.
Voyager 1 flew about 10° above the solar system after Saturn and Voyager 2 flew about 45° below the solar system after Neptune. It is easy to fling spacecraft up or down using planets!

We most currently could travel “up or down” with an inexhaustible fuel source to maintain constant thrust. Our understanding of the universe has not reached that level unfortunately.
Is up even relevant once you escape the atmosphere? Isnt every directiom both up and down and sideways in space?
