This video, created by Nucleus Medical Media, explains the procedure of a Dilation and Curettage, known as a D & C. There are two variations of this procedure: Diagnostic and Therapeutic. The diagnostic version removes a small sample of the uterine lining for biopsy. The therapeutic version removes the entire uterine lining to treat an known issue.
D & C begins like a routine pelvic exam, but with anesthesia. A speculum is inserted, then dilating rods are used in sequence to open the cervix. A hysteroscopy may be performed at this point. Then a curette is used to complete the intended version of D & C.

I have to have a D&C for excessive bleeding (day 31 as I type) cause by a possibly polyp or an intracavity fibroid. I made sure to request anesthesia after a 2022 traumatic biopsy experience in prep for my open myomectomy. The male MD said it would only pinch. That was a complete lie. The pain was so excruciating I screamed loud enought for the front desk staff to hear and almost passed out from the pain. I cannot understand for the life of me why, unless theres a risk for the patient, that a doctor would not offer a patient anesthesia to perform these types of procedures. Ladies…please always advocate for yourselves and let the medical professionals know what your personal needs are. Many blessings to all of you. 💕🙏🏼

I had it done yesterday and would agree with those saying to INSIST on anesthesia.
I was in a lot of pain when I first came out – VERY crampy and a little naseous at first. They wound up giving me some Tramadol as well.
Caveat, however, that they were also checking for any polyps to remove, which there were none, but they did also remove a fibroid. So it could be that the worst of it was due to the fibroid removal – I have no frame of personal reference since I’ve never had just a D&C before.
But I did have a cervical biopsy done a few years ago without ANY pain relievers. I assumed that I would be given a little something for it ahead of time, but NOPE.
It was awful. The FEMALE doctor actually didn’t get the last sample because I was in such pain.
What kind of monster does that to a person??
I even had my husband with me for moral support and I wound up nearly crushing his hand like he was my childbirth helper or something!
So if you ever need a cervical biopsy as well, INSIST that they give you something ahead of time for pain or tell you what kind of over-the-counter drugs you can take ahead of time.
In my country the procedure goes like this speculum (to open the birth canal) then the gynecologist puts his/her fist in to scoup out the blood multiple times and then use cotton wool for the final clean, all this is done without any pain meds, the pain is between you and your God 😭😭😭😭
I tried 3rd time ivf in which first two one were failed. Third time I conceived with DCDA twins successfully. But yesterday I lost my children at 19 weeks due to raptured membrane. I. Had conceived after 8 years of marriage💔😣😓.Almighty! why you did this to us😫🥱

On May 14,2026 my husband and I found out our babygirl had no heartbeat. I was 16 weeks. When you as woman finding your child passed. Put you through alot emotions. I tried push her out first but I only dilated 1 cm. That after two days of trying. We made the hard decision for me to have this decision. We wish our child was here with us but we know she's in a better place.

I had a D&C 2 weeks ago after tissue was stuck after having a miscarriage. The tablets didn’t fully work. I was losing a lot of blood and big clots. I started passing out and my partner found me passed out on the toilet 🙈 999 was called and took me to hospital where I had the surgery and a blood transfusion. I had heavy bleeding and clots 2 weeks prior to this episode which will always confuse me. My angel baby is called Alex as I heard my son tell his auntie he liked that name. (She’s pregnant)
i may be had to perform for d&c i was having 6weeks baby initial having heartbeat 90 bpm later told it stop beating also my husband is bot supportive he was having syphilis and i also got infected with it may be this was the reason behind my baby growth the pain women can go through with physically and mentally that men can never understand this i dnt knw for others but my man dose'nt care for me not even symphitized me

I should of had this done years ago after I miscarried on Christmas day, my boyfriend at the time left me home alone all day and went and got drunk … He was supposed to get me pads because I was bleeding so bad .. I had to call a friend to bring me supplies… She knew he had abused me in this way but that didn't stop her from having sex with him after I left him!! Probably because he had money…. I left with nothing and I'm happy.
I had D&C the anesthesia didn't work on me and the pain is so unbearable I got traumatized after that the pain is to much i thought I should die instead
Got this after depo provera caused me to bleed for literally six months! I'm soooo thankful my doctor went through with my request for one. Had my IUD placed the same day and never bled again 🙌🏻 I was surprised to see it's used to control excessive bleeding after birth considering how hard I had to fight for that surgery.
