First, she barely demurred when ABC News asked whether she aspired to run for president. “I haven’t ruled out the possibility,” she eventually said. Second, she tried to laugh off stances that progressives in her wing of the Democratic Party had taken in the preceding years: “‘Woke 1 was crazy,’” she said, echoing a comment that one of her allies had made about the heyday of ideas such as “defund the police.” Ocasio-Cortez represents an extremely liberal congressional district in New York City. What's with people saying Woke 1.0 started in 2020? I'd define Woke as a system of talking points and mode of analysis that started roughly in 2012. Silence is violence, but disagreeing is violence too. Whatever your attitudes about people of color, if you are white, you benefit from a system of privilege and are therefore racist. Melissa Click calling for "muscle" in 2015. Erika Christakis leaving Harvard for BS reasons. Defund the police is actually sane by comparison. It's actually an actionable policy and apologists for it are quick to morph it into only a partial defunding to replace cops with social workers.

What she meant during COVID giving the big Overton window is that there was a huge energy within the DSA party during George Floyd, there was literally NO NEED for police when everybody is staying at home, and there was a huge populist momentum with the stimulus check and UBI, and there was a push for things like FREE VACCINE which came to fruition. During COVID, there was a REAL need for populist and socialist ideas and Trump helped those policies pass too!! CEOs were getting pay increases while workers were furloughed, fired, and getting pay decreases! Big businesses were making more money while small businesses closed! So YES, COVID MADE EVERYBODY MORE WOKE! Otherwise, we wouldn’t have free vaccines we wouldn’t have BLM protests and we wouldn’t have all those protections from COVID evictions
