5 Opera challenges alongside a world-class Opera singer… but I don’t sing Opera!
Thanks to @glyndebourne opera house for making this possible:
And to @thewunderlin for being Epic:
You can watch Alina at Glyndebourne here:
What happens when a vocal coach who doesn’t sing opera goes head-to-head with a world-class opera singer?
At Glyndebourne, Beth takes on five opera challenges against coloratura soprano Alina Wunderlin, putting her voice, and her vocal coach knowledge, to the test. From sustaining long notes and controlling airflow to rapid-fire vocal agility, attempting to learn German, power to project notes without a microphone and pushing the very top of her vocal range, each challenge reveals just how extraordinary the demands of opera really are.
All set in the exquisite location of Glyndebourne, a state of the art opera house nestled in the English countryside. Alina is performing the role of Zerbinetta there, in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Her role demands exactly the kind of agility, power and stratospheric high notes Beth is attempting here.
Along the way, we explore the coordination of breath, vocal folds, tongue and jaw, why operatic projection is about more than sheer volume, and how the concentration of acoustic energy in Alina’s voice helps it carry across a room. There are spectrograms, soaring high notes, questionable German pronunciations and some extremely competitive singing.
Five challenges. One vocal coach and a world-class opera singer. How many can Beth actually pass?

There's holding a note and then there's belting an operatic note🎵
Forgive me for this comment for not being on topic. There is a very fun song I think you might enjoy analyzing. It's called "Charlie's Inferno" by That Hansome Devil. If you have the time in my humble opinion it's worth a look.
This was probably the most entertaining cultural youtube video I have ever seen. A million thanks and best regards from Vienna.
5:31 😂😂😂 wie kann es denn so schwer sein, ein paar Silben nachzusprechen, auch wenn man nicht weiß was das bedeutet. 🤣😅
What a great video, testing your ability against someone of such vocal skill you held your own. Would love to see you do similar against a female metalcore screamer like Courtney La Plante in another set of challenges. The green dress looks stunning on you.
Lovely
Your a mezzo-soprano comparing yourself to a coloratura, no crap she can sing the high notes and has more agility than you. This was kind of cringe, ooof! Good entertaining video though.
Such a delightful video to watch, two muses filling our souls with joy. Kisses from Brazil.
That's entertainment, such talented women!
Great! Italy here
Sé que te gusta escuchar a Juan Gabriel, te invito a reaccionar a Yuridia en " La plaza de toros México " " Mi eterno amor secreto" ❤
D#7?????? World Class and then some, holy bleep.
This was so fun.
❤ . . . bello video .. olá tudo bem . conheces a musica de Vanessa da Mata ?? musica name Boa Sorte ..
As an opera student, thank you for making this video. I think not enough people understand what actually entails being a classical singer, and these videos help others learn why we need so many years of training
As a listener of metal I dont know why I watched this. Weird
You're better off NOT trying to ALTER your voice to sound like a female opera singer. They ALL SOUND THE SAME with that overly exaggerated pretentious tone & vibrato along with poor diction. The reason they all sound the same is because they don't sound anywhere NEAR their natural speaking voice. The individulality is GONE. They sound ridiculous & very unpleasantly PRETENTIOUS..
❤❤❤❤
You are sooo amazing
Forestella’s fan
Ah, but has she e'r sung in the world's most poetic tongue? I think an opera in Scots dialect would be grand!
I cannot find the words to describe how amazing this is. Simply the best vocal coach video I have ever seen. This made me feel something that I haven't in so long. If you're ever in America or I find myself accross the pond again, I'd love to have the privilege of filming and editing a new video.
This structure really helps with two vocalists approach to the same note. Your courage and bravery are so respectful and so educational. Especially with those of us who struggle with imposter syndrome or just not sounding like the person you're trying to.
I never leave comments on videos but you have made my day so much better than it has been in too long.
Thank you ❤

Wonderful Beth, as always 👍👍❤️❤️
Well done, and a fabulous dress.👍🦘
As a classically trained tenor singer, this video was lots of fun to watch!
And it doesn't matter that you didn't win every challenge. You know your own voice and understand its limitations like any instrument, and not every singer can sing opera as there's a genre that is like a marathon compared to any musical genre! Amazing job Beth!
Grats! I grabbed some cookies and I’m watching something very interesting — it’s vocal!
P.S. how sometimes you want to sing, preferably not in an apartment building. I'm afraid the police will be called)).
Floating lagoon – fifth element – Alina))
Beth, I sympathize with you. For example, I have a loud voice. I have an upper respiratory allergy, so I speak loudly and with a nasal tone. On top of that, I spent several years singing Russian folk songs. My voice isn’t as loud as an opera singer’s, but I’m already tired of having to justify myself to friends and colleagues.
And it’s not really about straining the vocal cords or the lungs—it’s about using the diaphragm. Why strain yourself when the diaphragm can do all the work?
But you’re using your vocal cords, which is unnecessary for producing a loud, sustained sound.
Sorry for lecturing you. And try to break the habit of speaking with that raspy voice—it’s become fashionable in the U.S. and Europe.
You have a very beautiful voice, and it carries well. But that raspy quality we talked about before—the “fashionable” rasp—is useless. It doesn’t work with your voice; it puts strain on your vocal cords. It functions more like a protective shell, something associated with an older person.
Now imagine a woman over sixty with a youthful voice. For example, Klara Mikhailovna Rumyanova voiced the Hare in the Soviet animated series Nu, pogodi! Her voice remained youthful and bright into old age. She didn’t need to make her voice sound rough or “tough.” Why would she? A loud, clear voice is easier to hear than a raspy one.))
I hope I’ve planted a seed of doubt in your mind.))
p.s. Well, the main thing is that Alina shouldn’t study extreme vocals.
Opera is beautiful, amazing ❤😊
Absolutely Classic. 👍🍁
such a great video! more of that! I was also wondering how long you can sing and how low she can sing
Que lindas!!! 😻😻😻😻
OMG it’s really very difficult! 🫣
But you did well Beth!
Congratulations! 👏🏽😻
Super magic 👏👏👏👏👏🎧✌️
How fun!
ACTUALLY… this was quite a bit of Fun, Miss Beth ! Thanks !!
Honey! you did WAY better then most world class pop singers of today could do… I LOVE opera, and your competition was one of the VERY best I've ever heard of today's lyric coloratura's…
Tell me, are you completely out of your mind ??? Translations into more than 85 languages of all your clips ??? That is truly very hostile to other users, because with each download, all this shit comes with it and users have to spend extra time only to delete all that shit.
Let international users translat ethe english version by them selves. Your behavior in this matter is moronic !!
I'm watching this super late here in America…….and realizing I'm having SO MUCH FUN WATCHING YOU TWO!!!!! ~Respect from Tennessee
And now at 7:21 when she says, "that actually hurt my ears" It just doesn't get better!!!!!!!!!!!
3rd Edit………..at the end, you two hitting the high notes…….two, PROPER DIVAS………having fun without having animus………continued Respect!
Hello Beth I love You😍😍😍 for ver
You kept up with her until the very end BethRoars and then you couldn't quite hit it…but still great.
This was so much fun to watch! You both are world class! Thanks for the great video.
