SHOWDOWN Farmall M Power Steering vs 1600 # Bales | Engels Coach Shop

Can power steering on a 1952 Farmall M stand the test against 1600# round bales of hay? That is my whole purpose of adding power steering and now I get to find out if it was worth it. Greasing wheel bearings and thrust bearings might help so I did this also. Thanks for coming along.

Check out the NEW museum gift store site; treasuresoutwest.com

This is just the beginning of what will be available online. Items will be added regularly, but now available is the Engels Coach Shop line of signature t-shirts, caps and mugs.

If you’re in the area, please feel free to stop by the shop and the museum as well. There are many home made from local artisans and Montana made gifts available. There is a Borax display commemorating the building of the Borax wagons in 2016 – 2019 and the Smith Manufacturing manure spreader that I rebuilt. It was from a local ranch just 5 miles from here brought out in the early 1910’s. There are also many old tools related to the wheelwright trade and a display of lamps and tools from the Luminary Shoppe which operated here for over 40 years.

The shop is open Monday thru Friday 8 to 5. I am seldom around on weekends.
Winter Museum/store hours will be 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Tu-F

  1. Oh wow Dave 😮. In 10:15 you have the same hand crank self feed drill press that I used as a kid That was our drill press that’s all we had That was back in the sixties. And I still have it today. Don’t use it but still have it. 😊

  2. I also noticed that you might be overloading those tires. They sure do flatten out when you pick up one of those bales. That's adding about a half ton to each tire and that weight is 4 or 5 feet ahead of the front axle, so even more weight. You might need to get a larger size tire when you wear those out, if not before. In the meantime raise the air pressure to at least 45 psi. (If the tires won't take 45 psi, you may not want those tires.) That will also help the steering.
I do enjoy your videos, but most of all the wainwright/wheelwright work.

I would sure like to see some of your restorations in the Ft. Worth Stock Show Parade some January. There are no motorized vehicles in the parade, except a crew of street sweepers at the end. (Some day I will figure out why they are there to break the rule of no motorized vehicles.) I know getting your restorations to Ft. Worth, Texas would be a major trip.

  3. Being a mechanic for over 50 years on industrial equipment all you need to do is some maintenance and it works ! Now the old girl needs a Fresh paint job and it good for another50 years !

  4. you might consider adding some weight to the rear of the tractor, ballast on the 3pt hitch, will help take some weight of your front axle by moving the center of gravity back towards the rear tires.

  5. I always like watching Dave when he's about to go fishing. That can of worms has a few surprises that he can never count on. A misalign bracket, a different belt, the wrong bearings. etc. all make it more interesting to watch. I guess if you're thinking about those things in the evenings, that's why they call the worms "night crawlers".

  6. I would have stuck with the roller bearing rather than changing. For a give size roller thrust bearings will have a higher load rating than a ball thrust bearing. Line contact vs point contact. Important the seals are functioning. New seals are cheap insurance against failure. At the low speeds of this use, the tapered and thrust bearing will never wear out so long as they are kept lubed and clean.
