The company that designed the F/A-18 ended up as a subcontractor on its own aircraft! That’s just one chapter in the strange life of the US Navy’s “jack of all trades” aircraft, rejected by Hollywood, and now finally nearing the end of the line. What happened with the F/A-18?

It's a very old outdated a/c
Thanks for your video.
The F-14 was replaced because the swing wing design was more expensive to maintain than the Navy wanted to pay. There are other excuses but that is the reason the F-14 was replaced.
15 minutes in and nothing related to the title yet.
USAF YF-17 Cobra to USN/ USMC F-18 Carrier Based than later Suoer Hornet and EA-18 Growler. Possible Advanced Super Hornet.
THE INTAKES ARE ALSO REDESIGNED FOR REDUCED RCS fyi missed that detail
no airplane can fill the shoes of the F14 Tomcat
@19:29 the F/A18 might be a jack of all trades master of none, but its often times better than a master of one.
Russia today can not figure out how to build a similar jet to the F-35. The reason is engineering and antiquated computer systems from the early 2000's. Bet they are thanking US President Donald Trump now that he is delivering those jets to Turkey in 2029. Russia will have them stripped down and copied by 2030. Well, maybe a few years later. They generally don't understand the technology. He is also selling the latest Nvidia computer chips to China. I think we can see the future better than Trump and it will be dangerous at best.
No fan of any F-18 variant 😢yes it's a workhorse, but it doesn't have the legs for long distance like we need in Australia 🌏🦘 no mach 2 or 2.5😢
The S-3 was ASW first. It also tanked when the A-6 was retired. No ASW for the 18. I was on the flight deck back in ‘85-‘86 and thought looking straight on that it looked like Snoopy!🤙🤘
Northrop has been shafted numerous times by inferior companies with superior connections
In the 1980s I had a Navy LCDR. Phantom pilot friend. I asked him what he thought of the then-new F-18As. His answer, "Why do you think that the Navy is letting the Marines take the first ones?"
Amerikan equipment is only good against fighting those who are unarmed. they can't stand against equal adversary, its these propaganda movies that glorify these piece of junk.
The F18 originally was designed for the role that the F16 won with the Air Force . But the F18’s strength was hidden, not so much in how it looked, how it flew or what roles it could fill. The F18’s systems were modular, and that made maintenance and repair easier, perfect for the Navy. I might be wrong, but after I saw a video on how Australia was using the F18 and why they chose it I understood it much better than before. In that role it’s done a great job in everything except maybe, Air Superiority. Tell me if I’m wrong.
The F4 phantom was carrier based too? McDonald' Douglas should have had experience with it.
Did USA take British workers out of British industry too. USA stole the world in many ways. Starting with operation paperclip. Then they would steal anything not patented down.
The F35 is stolen too imo. I dont care if Lockheed purchased it from Russia. Yak-141 whatever twin engine super cruise harrier.
Then Lockheed purchased two non flying air frames hired the British to come and plumb it for one engiine? Or two?
USA couldnt get the thing flying either way then USA charge UK full price for them. After taking the harrier fleet as combat ready scrap material too.
USA has a great people for sure. But Germany 1940s said it the best. USA isnt a nation of people its a Hybrid Orphanage. You have your cream of the crop American Americans like McDonald's. Trumps. Samsons etc Nice side Europeans. But then you have your Dharmer's. Epstines. Gacy's. Menendez. Pagan side Europeans and not even that lot dragging them down.
Any time you see a true shocking story from usa ID the monsters name origin and you'll see a pattern.
Its the Harrier that was stolen. First everybody laughed at GB for making harriers. Then they went 20 and 0 vs argies. Then everybody was intrested. Especially USA.
Parking that harrier outside McDonald Douglas was the stolen Jet. GB made a deal with USA to give all the harriers to USA after they just had full upgrades packages too.
Wont be needing those again. 😢 common rhyme for GB USA. GB surrenders its tech to USA and then USA throws it into service after promising its just scrap.
Stolen is more than a bit of an exaggeration.
There was no way the F-17 was ever going to survive catapulting from and landing on a carrier.
Aside from the prototype XFT fighter, Northrop had only ever built the BT-1 for the Navy, which would ultimately lead to the (X)BT-2 aka the SBD Dauntless … back in the 1930s.
McDoDo had to completely redesign the Cobra to make it into a Navy Fighter (RIP Steve Ginter), keeping only the general layout, hence it also got a new designation, F/A-18 instead of F/A-17
Well, it wasn't Supermarine that built the most Spitfires either …
Well, as far as the movie "Top Gun" goes, Tom Cruise stared as the main character. However, the star of the movie was the F-14 Tomcat.
Another reason to not like MD or the Hornet 😎😅
To Mentour now & your audience – Mentour u are completely wrong… First neither the USAF nor The US Navy wanted the bug – 2nd in 79 Grumman Aerospace & Dick Cheney had come to blows when Cheney worked under Reagan so Grumman won that battle but when Cheney became VP they lost the War – rather than write a novel it’s called research so research why Dick took out Grumman but he started first with the A6 Intruder – Grumman would not fold so next on the Chopping block – The Tomcat – Grumman tried to save itself with new Trains for the LIRR and the Tomcat 21 but in the end a SCUMBAG name Dick Cheney bankrupted a Private Defense Contractor – put the company outta business (by the way it’s completely illegal) covered it up and convinced you the Hornet a piece of shit is the way to go – sorry I’m 4 weeks late in responding – Signed the Proud Son of A Grumman Airframe Engineer now decreased so if it helps your cause my father helped design the A6-E and F along with the E2-C all Cats up to the Tomcat 21 so sorry I’m 4 weeks late in correcting You!!
I joined the USMC in 1987. Then we still had A-4s, A-6s, EA-6Bs, Harriers, and F-4s (for photo reconnaissance), along with F-18s. By the time I got out in 1998, everything was F-18s with the exception of the EA-6Bs and Harriers. Now those are gone too, replaced by the EA-18G and F-35. So what was once 6 types of aircraft pretty much has been pared down to two…with different variants.
