On 10 July 1945, more than two months after Germany’s capitulation, the Type IXC/40 submarine U-530 surrendered at the Argentine naval base of Mar del Plata. Her commander, twenty-four-year-old Oberleutnant zur See Otto Wermuth, had been patrolling off New York when Karl Dönitz ordered the U-boat fleet to cease fire and surrender at the nearest Allied port. Instead, Wermuth set course for the South Atlantic.
Argentine inspectors boarded a sabotaged boat stripped of its Kriegstagebuch and its anti-aircraft guns, with fifty-four crewmen carrying no papers. Argentine, American, and British intelligence questioned them at length, in Argentina and then in the United States, and found nothing of value. The men were repatriated to Germany in 1946; U-530 was sunk as a torpedo target off Cape Cod in November 1947.
