Rise and shine
There is a Desktop mod for Half Life Alyx that removes the VR requirement. It's quite good, and it lets you play the game and experience the story. It does take some liberties with a few of the puzzles to make them work outside of VR and the game is a bit easier because of it but its still very fun.
Gman didn't retcon half life bad writers did.

The most terrifying thing about the G-Man is the ambiguous nature of him and his "employers". It's unclear what it is precisely that they want, what they are striving for, investing into. It's unclear whether that something is good for the people of Earth, or for any one person in particular. At least with the Combine, they're up front about things. Their stance is unambiguous, obvious, open for all to see. The G-Man operates in the shadows, only allowing those he interacts with to know just enough to do whatever it is he needs them to do. Through the whole thing, there's this uncomfortable feeling that they might be a threat, one much bigger than the combine, and much more in control of everything. And yet, there's also no actual proof of this. Just implications. It could be they allowed the Combine to take over Earth because the fate of the Earth is something they are indifferent to, or it could be that they allowed the Combine to take over Earth because they knew that at a particular place and time (and no sooner) due to events orchestrated by them the Combine would be forced off Earth anyway. It's a genuine mystery, a very eerie and uncomfortable one.
Okay so that's reeeaaally interesting that Gman needed someone else to interfere with Eli's fate for him. Makes it seem like all his power is not really his own; like he can't actually use these abilities without some sort of command from another entity. Presumably that entity would normally be his mysterious employers, but it doesn't actually need to be.
Raises even more interesting questions about this being. Like whether or not he even is a living being.
