It's more that the B and single A were more often used in multi-pack batteries and was too similar to the C (the B is taller than a C but skinnier). Individual B batteries were rare, but I have one made by Ray-O-Vac from the 40s (and a smaller one from Australia made by Eveready). They also used to make F and G batteries, but they were so huge their uses for practical purposes were limited.
