The Chinese Word That Doesn’t Quite Translate: 舍得 vs 舍不得 | HSK5( Chinese with Pinyin)

▶ Join as a member for early access:

舍得 (shěde) and 舍不得 (shěbude) are two of those Chinese words English can
explain but never quite translate. At heart they’re about one thing: whether
you’re willing to give something up — money, a favorite dress, an old photo,
even a person you love.

In this episode, Wen and Lirong unpack the words through everyday situations:
Would you check a luxury suitcase? Spend 5,000 yuan on a T-shirt? Let go of
someone you can’t forget? Along the way you’ll pick up the two core patterns —
舍得/舍不得 + a person and 舍得/舍不得 + a verb — and hear how 不舍得 shows up
in real, casual speech.

Great for intermediate learners (HSK 2–5) who want natural, conversational Chinese.

What’s something you’re 舍不得? Tell us in the comments.
