The Q’eswachaka grass bridge in Peru is rewoven every year from grass pulled by hand. A single blade snaps between your fingers, so how does it become a bridge people walk across a gorge?
More than a hundred thin cords become one rope as thick as a thigh. What carries that heavy rope to the far side is the thinnest cord of all, and last year’s bridge. And what finally holds a person’s weight is not the rope but the ground on both sides.
Four villages, Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Choccayhua and Ccollana Quehue, weave together for three days, and the next day is a festival. The knowledge was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013.
