A single ticket in Illinois hit the $1.04 billion Powerball jackpot, but after opting for the lump-sum cash option and paying mandatory federal and state taxes, the winner can take home hundreds of millions.   5. what he does not say is that ppl who take lump sum loses it. the annuity protect you from yourself and others. it depend on your age and financial knowledge cuz things happen that is out of your control. the amount you win also contributes to it. talk to ppl who took annuity vs lump sum ppl. i would deal with the yearly angst.
